I think the only condition in which I might reconsider going back on them, is if I had a literally infinite supply of either opiates or money to buy said opiates.

It fucking amazes me how ignorant some people can be when it comes to classifying drugs as "better for you" or "worse for you."
A debate I used to get into all the time, but have long since given up on, is the alcohol vs heroin debate (in terms of damage to the body).
So few people realize that alcohol is significantly more damaging to the body than opiates. Opiates are essentially benign to the body, in and of themselves.
Sharing needles is obviously dangerous and unhealthy.
Using heroin with unknown cuts in it always carries risks (e.g.: fentanyl).
But if you just compare them side by side and the negative effects they have on the body, alcohol is fucking poison compared to opiates.
I used to argue this all the time when I was an opiate addict. I've been free of opiates for four years now, and I have not changed my position one bit.
I literally drink, to the point of drunkenness, every single night.
Yet I never do opiates.
But RATIONALLY speaking, opiates are FAR less damaging healthwise.

So, I scraped some data from the "user" url path (Don't worry Lanny, I limited it to 1 request per second, even though your robots.txt says like 4 per second, and also, there are only like 5000 users, so that isn't too, too many requests).
Now that the data is saved, I'm gonna do some analysis.

Actually, it did occur to me to bring that up (video gaming) as one of the contenders for spiritual fulfillment. I'd say I'd be a good advocate for the whole thing because, even as a non/ultra-rare gamer, I can, from time to time, find the right game, with all the right mechanics and story line, not to mention great visuals these days.
The general concept of gamification is closely related to the underlying psychology of motivation, meaningfulness, engagement, and something akin to the escape from the existential void / cosmic joke.
Personnaly, though, I just tend to get bored of video games way too quickly, wheter I've beaten the whole thing, or interest just gradually waned.

So, first, I was a functional, night-time only alcoholic.
That worked. Straight up, it worked, my life was running like a well-oiled machine.
Then I dabbled in opiates, and eventually got hooked on those.
That didn't work. I was a non-functional opiate addict. Everyone deludes themselves into believing that they are that rare exception case that is an exceptionally functional addict. I really was with liquor though, and I could go into great detail that would support that fact. But with opiates, my mind and life revolved around ONE, and ONLY ONE thing: opiates.
I had no higher purpose in life. I had no values.
Pleasure and the opiate high were one and the same.
When you really think about that, it's sad as fuck. It means I would never:
1. Have a satisfying career.
2. Find love.
3. Be able to help others in any way whatsoever (oh, so you're a cancer-ridden tsunami-victim? well my next fix is more important than donating to your charity).
I then got opiate clean in 2014 (yay me!).
I returned to being a functional alcoholic, and I do all kinds of other drugs in (very loosely-defined) moderation.
So the moral of the story is...
Fucking none.
There isn't one.
Unless you can be one of those exceptionally rare fully-functioning addicts, who can juggle family, career, and altruistic efforts, and, most importantly, not equate pleasure directly with your particular drug of addiction (meaning, giving it absolute priority 1 among all things in your mind), then you're fucked.
That's it.
