2019-03-26 at 11:54 PM UTC in Who Is Your Favorite Female NIS Poster And Why?Scron/Ghost are the same person. Sploo is someone else with whom I don't have much familiarity. Then there's Roshambo whom I think is now Dissociator?
I think they all subscribe to the religious/spiritual school of Trianglism.
Yeah, the billion alts thing did bother me quite a bit at first, and only once I truly figured out who's who around here (and that took months, literally), did it start to bother me less.
Scron is our resident chemistry expert.
I will always have an appreciation for his contributions around here regarding chemistry.
And he can be entertaining as well. He might be a bit of an acquired taste though in that regard.
I guess everyone around here is kind of an acquired taste.
While all us Totseans/Zokletians/SpaceNiggas/etc have a few things that bind us together, we are also all pretty different from each in some ways subtle, other ways less so. -
2019-03-26 at 11:46 PM UTC in Why did I get a sinking feeling in my gut, and only feel pity? And also, you can have empathy via abstraction/analogy...
Like, I would accept someone with a serious eating disorder (like anorexia nervosa, for example) claiming to empathize with my earlier existing heroin addiction. -

Originally posted by WellHung Also… unless you've done heroin yourself.. you can't have empathy for her… only sympathy.
For some reason I'm always impressed when someone else actually understands the difference between the two. It's rare to see that.
But, that being said, it can definitely come off as a bit nitpicky/pedantic. -

Originally posted by Technologist We had a heroin addict come in the other day for treatment on her abscesses, (puss filled pockets in the skin, due to shooting up). She was covered in track marks everywhere. Said she’d been addicted for 10 yrs.
Here’s my question….
Why did my coworkers think she was disgusting instead of feeling sympathy for her?
There are a whole variety of possible factors, perhaps many of them interacting at once.
First off, track marks, straight up, look gross. Luckily, they generally heal over time. If you took a look at my arms, you'd never be able to tell that I've had hundreds of needles in them. There is not a single bit of physical evidence anymore that I was ever an IV user.
But, when they're there, they are gross, and that medical ick factor probably played a role. I've seen some absolute train wrecks of IV damage before... There was this one woman at a friend's place once who had this huge gaping abscess with a radius of like several inches.
*shudders*
I felt bad for her, but, reflexively and automatically, I was revolted by her.
At the end of the day, they are self-inflicted injuries. Humans just have a natural tendency towards judging, even if on a subconscious level, people for self-inflicted injuries.
Also, though, maybe they're just ignorant jerks who think they're better than the patient and that the patient was weak while they are strong. So you will definitely witness some contempt, which looks a lot like disgust. -

You did make a valiant effort to shift things to tentacle rape. -

Originally posted by -SpectraL Parents get charged for protecting their murderer children all the time. The kid confesses to the mother or father, and the mother or father does nothing. Then they get charged for aiding and abetting.
Curious, though, that they have the whole spousal privilege thing.
I guess marriage is a stronger bond than that between parent and child. -

Originally posted by We'reAllBrownNosers Everyone has a bit of evil in them. Sometimes it is over expressed in certain gene pools. What if you realized your kid was more evil than Ted Bundy? Just saying, you never know. Everyone in prison was (usually) someones bundle of joy originally despite how they eventually turned out. You just never know who you're going to get.
The most fundamental point I'm trying to get at is that: sympathy =/= approval.
I should have just made that super succinct statement at the beginning.
But, as always happens, I somehow end up having to prove that little formula.
You can absolutely disapprove of, condemn, even hate, the actions of a person, without hating the person themselves.
That's all there is to it.
When it comes to some political issues, they just ultimately boil down to definitions and personal values.
Same goes with abortion, immigration, etc.
And these more nuanced distinctions are virtually never altered during debates.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with a bit of healthy discourse, and this thread accomplished it (despite originally being about wall posters, lololol).
But nobody truly budged on their most deeply held beliefs.
Hence why I very seldom engage in political debate. -
2019-03-26 at 11:20 PM UTC in What posters did you have on your walls as a teenager? If I had a truly recidivistic serial offender for a child, and we had tried everything and I truly felt they would inevitably re-offend if given the opportunity, I might pull a Of Mice and Men kinda thing. If anyone is killing my menace of a son/daughter, it's going to be me, not the state, and certainly not some angry mob.

I seriously feel like I'm being trolled here. -

Originally posted by We'reAllBrownNosers I'd have no problem throwing one of my kids into an active volcano if necessary
That doesn't strike you as overly dramatic?
I dunno. You raise a child for decades, bond with them, take them to preschool and kindergarten and grade school, throw them birthday parties every year, watch them graduate...
Then you could just drop them into a volcano?
I just don't get it.
That sounds like you might actually have sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies. -

Originally posted by Octavian I remember reading about Ted Bundy's mother still having love for her son, despite him being one of history's biggest rapist lady killers. Not to mention his last victim was a child!
If any of my children, regardless of how much I love them, grew up and turned into Bundies; I would straight up advocate their deaths.
Would you at least advocate for a humane death?
I mean, I could understand that at least.
I would consider it an act of mercy, even. -

Originally posted by We'reAllBrownNosers Drug addicts do not tend to fall into the category of those that should be preserved. No matter if you say it isn't an addiction, they would automatically consider you a drug abuser, if not an addict.
I was being facetious. Ask fifty people for a eugenics plan and you will get fifty different set of criteria.
Heck, there are some radical environmentalists that see ALL HUMANS as a plague on this planet.
Eugenics just can't be discussed in any serious capacity because it's entirely too subjective.
Originally posted by We'reAllBrownNosers Leftists also have differences in their brains to people on the right, and unfortunately, they would probably consider you a radical as well as a drug abuser.
But am I a leftist?
I consider myself a radical centrist. And if there's one thing a radical centrist would NEVER go for, it's any kind of eugenics regime. -
2019-03-26 at 11:01 PM UTC in What posters did you have on your walls as a teenager? Also, the term "pedo sympathizer" is entirely too loosely (or, really, not at all) defined.
Does it make me a pedo sympathizer if I would have a problem with my son or daughter being raped repeatedly in prison because they turned out to be a practicing pedophile? Then, by all means, call me a pedo sympathizer, because I guess I am one.
But so are you, Technologist, when you said you would try to get your son/daughter the help they need if you discovered they had the same tendencies, and that you would stand by them for moral support while they endure their criminal sentence.
Really, it's my ultimate contention that LITERALLY EVERYONE would be a so-called "pedo sympathizer" under the right conditions.
If you could sit back and watch, and even enjoy, your own adult son or daughter being sexually abused as some form of "justice", I would accuse you of either being disingenuous, or possibly a psychopath. Either way, you're worse than the remorseful pedophile who seeks to cure their ailment if you ever take actual pleasure in the sexual assault/abuse of another human being.
Now, if "pedo sympathizer" means you actually believe we should be trying to legalize or even de-stigmatize pedophilia, you're an absolute wackjob, quite frankly.
I can't believe I have to repeat this for like the dozenth time in this thread, but, at least in my opinion, RAPE / SEXUAL ASSAULT / SEXUAL ABUSE / and NON-CONSENSUAL INTERCOURSE BETWEEN ADULT AND MINOR, are all morally wrong.
You (whomever) have the right to be a rape relativist and take pleasure in another person's sexual assault, but I legitimately see absolutely zero difference between you and the person you condemn.
