Except we've come along way in terms of understanding it and even had some success in treating it. Very little empirical success, unfortunately, but it's gonna be an uphill battle.

It's like those deluded NAMBLA clowns and other such groups are actually truly believe that children can consent to sexual intercourse regardless of age. Do they sit there stroking their mustache like cartoon villains? No, they legitimately see themselves as revolutionary human rights activists.
I, myself, take the (apparently) radical position that nobody should ever be raped or sexually abused/assaulted, or enslaved, or have their face melted off by corrosives, etc. -

I like what you are saying here, as it is a lot more humane than what many others would wish upon a pedophile with whom they share zero familial association.
But when you read what you just said, and read what you typically say about the scenario when not considering the offender being your own child, do you truly feel like you are being 100% consistent?
You know how a lot of people believe in the moral/ethical dictum "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
I live by that, but slightly modified, and it has had an incredibly impactful effect every single time I find myself judging another person's actions, or deciding on what a fair punishment would be for them...
And that's this modified version: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto your closest/dearest loved ones."
It's why I can comfortably say, I find adult/minor sexual relationships morally repugnant.
But you know what else I find equally morally repugnant? Treating these offenders inhumanely or unjustly or as downright evil entities.
In the first scenario, I imagine, say, my mother or father, or one of my siblings, or possibly future children I may have one day, being the victims.
In the second scenario, I imagine the exact same thing, only the victim is not sex abuse victim but a victim of society's cruel treatment.
I mean, if someone commits a single rape, then spends 25 years in prison, being raped over and over, how are they not also a victim?
Or are we picking and choosing when sexual assault/abuse and rape is taboo, and when it's totally kosher?
That presents a scenario that just plain makes me sick. -

I more or less agree with this notion, except that you do have to draw a line somewhere.
It's precisely why I advocate for (psychological, perhaps even biological) treatment first and foremost, then once an actual offense with a real live victim occurs, punishing the offender, but humanely.
It's the jumping right into medieval, or even down-right biblical (Old Testament), punishments, that is so unreasonable and even cruel/sadistic to me.
It's not unreasonable to assign a certain degree of personal responsibility.
I mean, if someone drove drunk and mowed down a bike race or something, killing dozens of cyclists, we're not just gonna say "well, they were too drunk to rationally choose to drive, or not to drive, and thus they are 100% innocent."
But the important thing is to balance personal responsibility with the mitigating factors brought on by the recognized mental illness (or whatever other decision-influencing factors, such as intoxication in the above example). -

I make it a point to counter this particular argument EVERY SINGLE TIME with another scenario that literally no parent imagines...
If your own son (or daughter… female pedophiles, albeit rare, do exist) turned out to be a pedophile, even an actual offending one that acted on their impulses, would you be comfortable with your child being vilified and turned into a monster in the court of public opinion? Would you be comfortable with them being physically tormented and sexually violated on a regular basis while in prison?
Your duties to protect your children don't just go "poof" up in smoke as soon as they do something wrong. -

But it seems like out of some kind of psychological denial mechanism, no one with potentially dangerous sexual predelictions will admit to it.

Octavian, one thing you'll come to learn about me is that, while I oppose adults having sex with minors, I generally argue in favor of humane treatment of pedophiles, even individuals like vinny, who really challenges me to the absolute limits in this regard.
Sometimes this gets me labelled as a pedophile myself, or even a pedophilia apologist (I ended up on some kind of list back on Zoklet that did not distinguish between A) "advocate for humane treatment of pedophiles WHILE ALSO adamantly being ethically opposed to adult/minor sexual relationships", and B) "being a full blown, completely unashamed and unrepentant pedophile like good ol' Vinny".
Although I do find myself getting into the whole debate less and less frequently over time, because often times I end up actually caught in the cross fires, and will be called pro-pedophilia by one camp, and some kind of anti-pedophile "bigot" by the other.
But anyway, just a round about way of saying that I totally agree that folks like vinny, phantasmagoria, and so on, should really just get the fucking depo-provera shot, get some therapy, and find healthy ways to channel their sexual urges.
They will get my full sympathy if they do that.
But, of course, virtually none ever will because they have to first admit to having a paraphilia. It's worse than the denial you see in addicts. -
