Oh my fucking god you idiot. I agree with Obbe that there should be a feature to subscribe without posting, but disagreeing with YOU that view to subscribe is the answer.

    Fucking hell you’re dumb

then all you have to do is click and view the fred once and you're subbed to it.

    .

But then you’d get subscribed to every bullshit ass thread you click on but aren’t interested in after checking it out.

And sometimes there are thread you like to read but don’t post in them.

Or times like I said where I accidentally click the unsub button

Its hilarious getting there thirty minutes early, finding an empty row and sitting on the end, and watching people look for places to sit while my row remains empty because nobody wants to ask me to let them by

Originally posted by Zanick That's fascinating, but are you suggesting that movement in plants is indicative of emotion? That would be an absurd leap, considering that the physical process is well understood and doesn't require what we'd consider 'feelings'.

no, i just want to point out that it has the ability to feel, and the difference between the feel of being touch, tickle, itch or pain is intensity of the simulation.

so if it can feel touch, its possible also that it can feel pain, as most other living things that are capable of feeling touches do.

If there's one valuable grain of knowledge that would be preserved from our millennia of animal vivisection, it's how to observe every conceivable pain response. Plants don't appear to.

    yet.

before the invention of photo plates and geiger counters, none knew of radiation and its assortment of rays. or background radiation before radio telescopes are available.

one day humanity may accidentally discover a tool to detect plant communications.

  9. Originally posted by Zanick Oh, I may have wrongly assumed that you had intended to generalize the issue to make a claim about other plants as well. My apologies.

I mean, it's possible. Let's not jump to conclusions.

I don't have a spectacular command of biology, but my understanding is that its reaction is purely physical in nature.

That posits that our "feelings" are not purely physical in nature, or that you have some way to note that other things have non-physical response session, even though the only way you can observe or interact with them is purely physical, no?

If you're not claiming to be able to access this qualia, then your argument is essentially unfalsifiable and meaningless. If we found an alien creature and couldn't tell if it was a plant or a fungus or an animal, just some alien life form, how would you determine it could "feel"? How do you know it's not just a very convincing automaton if it expresses what you intuitively recognize to be emotion? What about a dog? When I kick it, it whelps and yelps but how do I know it has a mind? I mean this is Phil 101, my bub.

And furthermore, it's not a plant I would ever consider eating.

Why is it being uniquely examined for sentience in this discussion, unless your intent is to perform the aforementioned generalization?

It is intended to test the limits of the premises of your philosophical belief. We don't speak in generalities in philosophy. The exceptions are what shatter theories, because theories are meant to be generalisable models, not special cases.

The jedis and palestinians on my campus are having a shitflinging contest at the moment. It's been going on for years but it's flared up recently after the jedi group invited the Mayor of Tel Aviv (I think, some mayor) to give a talk and the palestinian group shouted him off the stage. jedi group went out and publicly declared the university's administration and all the professors in the arab studies department anti-semites and now some dudes are going around campus tagging "zionists not welcome" and "zionism is racism" everywhere and both parties are trying to catch them for obvious reasons. Someone noticed that if you report the tagging in progress, campus police will take segways or actually sprint across campus to try and catch them and I'm pretty sure someone is putting in phony reports a couple of times a day just for the spectacle of it.

Everything we do societally comes from consensus, including our morals.

Clearly not true. Religious minorities and conscientious objectors are obvious examples of people with moral principles contrary to the "will of the people"

All executive power is derived from the will of the people. Unless you want to push some kind of divine command theory or objective morality, I don't see how you can argue against the dominance of the will of the people being the ultimate basis of our society, and everything else in between the will of the people and its execution, as essentially being a vestige of the time when they were a systematic necessity. My hope would be only that reason and humanity wins out.

No command theory required at all. Act utilitarians can easily deny a "consent of the governed" framework of rule on by making the case that it's not an optimal means of securing the well being on the citizenry, which it's quite obviously not.

The reality outside this is the absolute. Timeless, distorted, multiple instances of reality at once etc.
Its the hidden ocean beneath the waves, its the book of existence. It is where we all go when our body can't take it anymore, and when i say we i mean our perception and perhaps awareness.

  17. The universe is really fucking bizarre
    Like
we're being projected RIGHT now on some infinity spanning grid in some zone of existence that is being rendered by who knows what the fuck.

    like

we are literally a simulation in the same sense that a video game is a simulation
we are information, patterns of energy that are beaming through some invisible lattice we can't perceive
my original vision of the universe and the one projected by the media and educational institutions is a complete sham
reality is not at all how we originally perceived

it gets even more bizarre the deeper you go and think about this

    like

if the sum of you existence is that your self is a amalgamation of particles following the path of some invisible lattice just like pacman
and your consciousness is the byproduct of the macro level processes of the pattern that follows the lattice

what the fuck is outside this?

what would "reality" even be like outside of this dimension
if you could find a source to this chain then what would that be like?
    there is like

literally millions of years worth of scientific knowledge to be uncovered in the coming decades holy shit

  19. Originally posted by Open Your Mind No. I don't deserve that. I didn't do anything wrong here. I posted a documentary I thought was interesting and that I thought other people here might also like to watch. Almost immediately the insults started. So, I started citing research that had demonstrated that plants do have intelligence, do process information, sense their environment, communicate, etc. At no point did I even state my own opinion, all I did was post the information. And the shitposters just kept shitposting. No counter arguments. Just shit posting. Captain Falcon even started shit posting that he doesn't have any intelligence. And Fox tried pulling the semantics card and then turned around and said I was the one playing with semantics.

I'm not going to kill myself. I'm going to keep living life, keep sharing the things I like and if you guys want to shit all over it, well, I suppose that just makes you shitty people.

I didn't read the thread, but it sounds like all you did was post facts? Plants DO communicate with each other, as well as other species. This is known. Whether or not you decide to call it intelligence is a different issue, but other than that I don't see how there can possibly be five pages of this dumb shit debate?

  20. Originally posted by Zanick This is a distinctly monistic ontology. You aren't avoiding philosophy with your arguments, you're joining in. I think you'll like it.

Not really. Atheism proposes that there is no god, which is a philosophical position that denies taking a religious one. Egoism, on the other hand, is a valid way of philosophically examining your moral choices. Is there a specific strain of egoism that you find particularly appealing?

Originally posted by Lanny On the off chance this isn't stirnerposting, why other than a moral truth could justify your obligation to do what benefits yourself?

Yeah, it was stirnerposting and I'm not actually an egoist. Moral nihilist is probably the most fitting description. Which of course means that I think egoism is a perfectly fine philosophy to follow if one is personally inclined, as is the belief that we have an obligation to stop eating meat. But I wouldn't use the word truth in the context of moral philosophy since these are rather arbitrary constructs.
