The one time I tried homebrew booze was when I was like 13 and mixed sugar, water and yeast in gallon jugs under the stairs. Produced alcohol of course but it was hard to drink enough to get drunk without throwing up.

There's a fundamental difference between denying authority in a special case (this one, based on historical evidence) and denying its legitimacy generally. More concretely, no one who's owned the webspace this community is housed in has had special access to truth in the realm of setting rules on a BBS and that includes me. Just because I don't have the expertise to make good super-legal restrictions on site content doesn't mean such restrictions don't exist, or if they don't exist it doesn't mean that more generally there doesn't exist better or worse restrictions on the populous at large that can justifiably be maintained by force. The point here is that justified authority comes in proportion to domain expertise. Whereof one has no expertise (forum administration) thereof one must not legislate. -

No vB license on hand, downloaded a cracked version. May throw the money at jelsoft at some point but we'll see.
As for safeguards, that's a good question, I've been thinking about the same issue. So the first thing worth saying is that I'm happy to give the site to someone else, no matter how much of a clusterfuck it is, if I decide I can't take it anymore. That doesn't offer much protection in the case of blackmailing though. I don't think I've done anything that anyone knows about that can be used to blackmail me (I've made peace with the genderfaking thing coming to light, full DGAF mode) but it's something worth considering. I've thought about distributing copies of the database at regular intervals. Passwords should be hashed securely (but it wouldn't surprise me if it was some pussy ass crypto like SHA-1, need to dig into the code) but there doesn't seem to be a way to get around PMs being made public without a BIG code change and all the caveats that come with pbkdf. I'm totally open to ideas here though, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make a clean transition feasible (ala deadmans triggers that won't let me back out in a blackmail situation) that doesn't compromise user security in the now.How's the site financially wise? It's probably cheap to run now and there's no point in thinking about future problems at the moment though.
Hosting cost is $10 a month at the moment plus $7 a year for the domain or whatever. Will probably bump the hosting fairly soon but the cost is so low I have no need nor desire to defray costs via advertising or anything else.What about hosting security and your own security? Looks like site's hosted by ramnode in the US and there's some other info. Are we ok in this department? There's no questionable content and I sure as hell hope we won't get any, but I'm a bit spooked by how the last 3 sites were shutdown.
Yeah, going with ramnode because they're the best of the low end that I've found but they are american and DMCA compliant. Might think about moving hosting offshore if it's necessary, we'll see how it goes. Latency to Romania is kind of a pain in the ass and I'm ultimately located in the US either way so no level of opsec I'm going to put out will make US-illegal content feasible but I'm willing fight a suit if I think it's possible (based on caselaw) to win and if it comes down to something like torrents where a host ignoring US LE complaints will make it go away then I'd be willing to make the move.
Also my whois is a funny mix of actual info and made up stuff. Again, I'm not particularly worried about being doxxed, I assume what I post here will eventually be made public anyway. -

How long you plan on keeping this place up?
Until a clear "next place" after rdfrn emerges or until no one posts anymore if here ends up being that next place. If TB or riflow end up with a clearly larger active userbase then I'll shut this place down and redirect there, the side sites are kinda lame IMO. I don't expect to be doxed out of business (my PI is already out there, socal DGAF) and hosting costs are pocket change. If I ever don't want to host the site anymore I'm not going to wax poetic at the last moment and insist the ship go down with me (ala zok), if some nigga is fool enough to take on administration they'll have it.
