Going in without armor to a situation with an unknown number of shooters, an unknown layout and having to smash down locked doors is bad juju. That said- if you want to be treated like a hero (even though cop pay is pretty shit), take some risks sometime. Cant ask for a more noble death than to die saving children. Those cops will have to live with the consequences of their inaction though, and i wouldnt be surprised if a couple of them eat a bullet.
