God, I swear, these people. They're the reason why politicians/parties that leftists despise and demonize like Le Pen and the UKIP are going to become increasingly popular.
These attacks aren't going to stop no matter how much tolerance and welfare they throw at them. You can clearly see in France that they never integrate, there have been large Muslim ghettos for years, multiple cities in places that are primarily Muslim. Regardless of how many decades they pass the statistics are clear, outcomes are continually poor, there's never genuine integration.
But these people want to be wrong, they desperately want to believe in a comforting lie that's in line with their ideology, with what others pressure them to believe, to conform to. Leftism has replaced Christianity as the primary religious doctrine for many. -

How did the kid blow his legs off and how was it confirmed?

So, what's up, aldra?
I know, right? What people don't realize is that you're essentially being told two things.
1.) Things could be or get worse.
That doesn't make me happy. I really don't see how anyone could derive joy from this.
2.) There are people out there that are suffering more than you.
Once again, nothing about this makes me happy and it doesn't appear to be a psychologically healthy thing to derive contentment from.
I do believe it's part of human nature, sexual competition leading to competition for status, that leads to a natural inclination to compare your life to others and that does seem to lead to a strong effect on mental wellbeing/quality of life. But, let's assume there was an objective happiness/quality of life scale from -10 to 10. If you're at -5 and someone is at -10, them being at that level changes nothing about your own suffering. Most people don't understand what truly drives human beings, and life in general, at its core and what we derive lasting happiness from.
Originally posted by Discount Whore I am happy. I don't have to worry about money, or being homeless, or having a wife or kids that don't love me. Sometimes I get anxiety over keeping afloat but I've got a constant reminder that things are good. Mostly my unhappiness comes from work. I hate the people I work with, even though I find the work interesting. They all think I'm a straight edge stickler because I only talk about work, and I'm friendly enough to where they don't know I don't like any of them.
Hopefully when my wife finishes school I will be able to downgrade to a job I enjoy more. We need the income for now though. But I can deal with it. It's worth it.
What do you do for a living, what's your wife going to school for/career plans, and what would be your ideal job to downgrade to? Just taking an interest in your life. Happiness with life does not seem to be the standard here. -

You feel oddly similar to me as Ash, the stray cat I've made friends with. In a non-sexual/rapist manner (I swear that's not something I would actually do.). Like this oddly passive, yet benevolent and calming, presence. -

There is a profound asymmetry to childbirth. Can't really blame men for wanting out of such a horrifying situation, although drugging her with an abortifacient would be the most intelligent and moral thing to do. One less life to ruin, no sense in having her drag you down with her. -
2017-05-22 at 3:46 AM UTC in (Enter) Forgetting to Use Birth Control: Unwanted Pregnancies Support...Well, at least you admit it, Hydro. We all have terrifying innate aspects of human nature, which we never chose, that we should be aware of and strive to overcome.
That's why I definitely want a vasectomy. I want zero chances of creating life, especially with my horrible genes and what an awful father I'd make.
Unfortunately cases like your mother's may be far more common than most would like to believe. -

Hedonic treadmill.
The things that most people assume will bring them happiness in life can actually contribute very little, if anything, in the long-term. None of us chose to be born and enslaved (not literally) by our biology, I think we have a right to complain, to air our grievances as to the human condition.
Having a decent job and material conditions really aren't that important. For example, the happiness of immigrants, from third world countries to the US, actually doesn't seem to increase much at all long-term.
If you think of it from an evolutionary standpoint, some aspects of human life, life in general, are just horrifying.
Of course, it really is best not to dwell on it and there are ways to attain something lasting, some sense of peace. The Buddha had a point when he focused on techniques to ease human suffering, rather than metaphysical issues that are ultimately non-conductive to this. I wouldn't say human beings are doomed to remain in this state. -

Originally posted by Lanny It's 'aight, been kinda down for the last year although not for any real reason. My life's quite comfortable but that kinda makes me feel stagnant, bored. It's happened before, I know what it takes to get out of a slump, it just takes a lot of work and empty hedonism is much easier.
What's gotten you out of the slump?
There's actually interesting research that the highly intelligent are actually more likely to suffer from certain disorders, mainly generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and bipolar. The odds ration actually seems to be quite stark.
For the latter, full blown bipolar isn't necessarily the standard, the severity is a spectrum, like autism and anxiety, other things. It does seem that many highly successful and productive period have had regular bouts of mania and depression, or, in terms of other aspects, bursts of productivity and creativity followed by troughs of stagnation.
Things can honestly just hit you out nowhere. There really is a strong biological basis for many people, especially if certain things seem to have been consistent throughout your life, particularly after puberty (not having anything to do with women/sexual relations, seems to have to do with neurological development), with no apparent environmental cause.
Unfortunately there are a lot of reasons to feel down as a human being and no guarantee of lasting gains in happiness (hedonic treadmill). Although, this book is actually quite good and sound, supported by scientific evidence and reasoning: https://www.amazon.com/Happiness-Guide-Developing-Lifes-Important/dp/0316167258
Mainly getting your brain to shut the fuck up and stop dwelling on negative and metaphysical issues whose resolution won't bring about happiness anyway, just being in the moment, forging strong social relations, feeling like a part of something larger than yourself, like you're actually seriously contributing to something you're passionate about, that you care about and is important to you. -
2016-06-12 at 8:38 AM UTC in (Enter) Forgetting to Use Birth Control: Unwanted Pregnancies Support...Evolutionary Psychology Theory
Came across two interesting papers. The first: https://www.questia.com/library/jour...ed-pregnancies
I can't find them anywhere and couldn't hack an account on the luckypatcher app, don't want to use up a free trial, if they still have them. I'm going to request them on r/scholar.
I did find a thread from 2003 discussing this. Seems some had access to it and posted interestings comments on it:
http://www.bcharchive.org/3/thearchi...a.html?t=54894Eisenman (2003) looked at 110 women in a midsize city who were "asked about their last pregnancy, and whether or not birth control had been used. They were also asked if they intended to use birth control but had forgotten to do so, since pilot work had shown many cases of this."
Interestingly, it as found that:…32 women said that their last pregnancy had occurred because they had forgotten to use birth control. On purpose, 51 women had not used birth control, and 21 women had used birth control but reported that it did not work, i. e., they got pregnant anyway.
The author wonders…if this is motivated forgetting, in that ovulation caused them, in some way, to want to become pregnant. Although that cannot be proved with the present data, it is certainly something worthy of further investigation. Could it be that, at ovulation, one's physiology and brain chemistry sabotage the desire to avoid pregnancy?
Could it? Seems possible.
http://www.bcharchive.org/3/thearchi...t=54894&page=2Quite an interesting study. Actually, the birth control failure numbers are almost as interesting as the forgetting numbers, if not more so.
Most common forms of birth control are 98-99% effective when used properly. Given that, on average it takes six months to get pregnant with no birth control (just an average), this implies that it takes on average at least 3000 months (i.e. 250 years) on average to get pregnant with birth control. Assuming that a typical woman uses birth control for 20-25 years, this would be 10% of birth control using women getting pregnant anyway in a lifetime. This would contribute to less than 8-10% of all births, since presumably, some women have abortions (a large percentage of preganncies end that way and one would expect more among such accidents), and because many couples use sterilzation, which is hard to accidentally do wrong, for a good part of their reproductive years.
These figures showed a roughly 20% accident rate, or about two to three times what this theory would predict.
One would expect that both forgetting and misuse of birth control might have hormonal impacts.
And, while differences in cognative function are not proven by this study. They are not unprecedented. One recent study (reported in Science News, I believe) showed that women's performance on "structural vision" type tasks varied from to almost identical to men during their periods to much worse than men during ovulation. I'm not vouching for that study personally, but it does at least provide some coroborration for the hypothesis.
Who's to say that the presence of male pheremones don't exacerbate this effect? Maybe sex does make you stupdi.
On the traits women desire in partners:Men should want to impregnate as many women as possible, as this would be the best way to spread their genes into future generations. Since women get pregnant, this strategy would not work for them, so they tend to desire men who have money, power and status, and will invest in them and their children.
(Duh.)
There's also this just before it cuts off:Human females can be receptive to sexual intercourse at all phases of their menstrual cycle, but desire increases at ovulation (Alcock, 1989; Stanislaw & Rice, 1988). Further, when women have sexual affairs with someone other than the husband or boyfriend, the affair often occurs during ovulation, the woman and her partner typically use no birth control, and the partner chosen by the woman has some quality that the husband/boyfriend lacks (Baker & Bellis, 1993; Bellis & Baker, 1990). …
The second paper by the same author: Ovulation, Female Sexuality, and the Unconscious: An Evolutionary Psychology View
https://www.questia.com/library/jour...he-unconscious
The search for truth, adherance to rationality, and acceptance regardless of what you find. The answers you find aren't always the ones you would have hoped for. For me, I suppose they never have been when it came to humanity.
Reality is unbearably ugly. Those who can see and do not look away, attempt to convince themselves otherwise, are perceptive and give deep thought to matters, will likely be confronted with this at some point in their life.
Nietzche: Everything in woman is a riddle, and everything in woman has one solution—that is pregnancy. For the woman, the man is a means: the end is always the child.
Inb4 Lanny condescnedingly and elitistly disparages this, waves it away as if it isn't even worth taking seriously or arguing, or points out obvious flaws when the full papers aren't even available yet; although we could look for some of the references cited.Of course that means I shouldn't be making any judgments on this, but I merely posit this as supporting a general theory, evolutionary psychology being as valid as many other fields (The hard sciences will never be matched in their concreteness *badum-tish*), and it being absolute nonsense, incredibly simplistic and inconsistent thinking to dismiss it simply because we can't observe the past or recreate human evolution (high bars when convenient). It's not as is strong evidence can't be procured to strongly support a theory, and aggregated to form a sound, logically consistent, coherent, well supported general theory of human behavioral patterns. That or Hegeleypuff uses obfuscate: http://existentialcomics.com/comic/74 (Note: Lanny once drunkenly admitted to having had a wet dream about Hegel during his late teens.). -

Let's say your parents or grandparents, anyone you might care about, if there actually is anyone you don't just use and abuse for your own self-centered oblivious gain, developed some medical condition. Would you say to them, "Dad, why don't you just kill yourself? I'd rather be dead than have to take heart medication every day to be able to live."
And it's not as if you haven't been depressed before. IIRC you've actually admitted to having attempted suicide before, which I never have. You were also homeless, whored yourself out to gay men, have had nothing but a string of the lowest menial labor, fuck the most unattractive women because that's all you can get, although you claim/delude yourself into believing you actually have a preference for these "slampigs", as you call them, have been homeless in the past, showing that you were probably bad enough that even your parents didn't want to help you, have been an absentee father, didn't learn your lesson and continued to have reckless sex and made another woman pregnant, have been arrested countless times (thank you doxer) etc.
Unlike me, in as poor health as I am right now, there is nothing anyone can do to help you. There is no pill, form of therapy, or medical procedure that can improve who you are. You are utterly beyond redemption. I will likely get through this in time, but you will never improve your lot in life, the person you are.

2017-05-21 at 4:44 AM UTC in teh retraded thred herppppp slober fuk glum editshinIn less depressing, but useless, news, Ash's coat has been looking much healthier. It's rewarding seeing the progression of her behavior, comfort around me, signs of affection and happiness. She used to have a concerning number of scabs, likely from fights with other cats, some fur loss from behind her neck. Ever since I started feeding her good food and letting her stay the night, or whenever she wants in and I'm awake, these have reduced considerably.
I also noticed that she seems cool with little guy (girl?). Little guy seems to have gone back to her normal behavior after being spooked for a few days, maybe a week, after a gust of wind knocked over her bowl and blew the screen door against the wall. Bella still seems at ease around me and comfortable with physical proximity, at least enough to place water and food right in front of her.
I wonder if they've all unified around me, in a way. Makes sense that competition for resources would be a major driver of territorial and aggressive behavior. Me feeding them, them having a common figure to group around, a territory to meet and source of food, likely reduced that. -
