The combined toluene extract is washed exhaustively with six 250 mL portions of warm (60 C) hydrochloric acid (3 N), with six 250 mL portions of warm (60 C) 50% sodium hydroxide solution, the organic layer is dried (sodium sulfate) and evaporated to dryness in vacuo.
