the secondary sources split depending on the recruiter;
first: the saudis are 'adopting' sub-saharans with assorted means of motivation such as money, 'because allah said to come fight for mohammed', 'when youre done killing infidels (other mudslimes) you can live in the great city of mecca', etc
second: the 'west' is recruiting pretty much anyone via the typical blackwater-esque corporations. allegedly illegal immigrants from s.america/latin america are high on the list of dead bodies theyre scraping up out of the dirt. -

That's why mercenaries are even a thing - mercenaries are associated with military technology and tactics, like pole-axes or gladius warfare or whatever. It's pretty cool - I mean why not be a mercenary if you have better weapons, armor and training than your opponents?
You don't really find mercenaries fighting in dumbass meat-grinder wars. For that you need the modern nation state, with their ability to round up, equip and lead to the slaughter millions of men. -

the real question is, what do you do with mercs when you don't need them anymore? what will they do when they become experienced and efficient and you don't want to pay them anymore? how will you defend yourself if someone else pays them to attack you, considering you rely on them as a standing military? -
2018-05-23 at 4:05 AM UTCApparently the SDF has been stepping up their 'recruitment drive', and by that I mean they've been pressing so many people into service that they've started 'recruiting' minors, though I haven't been able to determine how young.
As a result tensions have been rising between them and the locals, in one case shopkeepers in Manbij have organised a strike and shut their doors, which the SDF responded to by opening fire into the shutters and raiding their stocks.
A number of locals who fled the fighting in Afrin have gotten so sick of the Kurds' shit that they tried to return to take their chances with the Turks - SDF fighters opened fire on them at a checkpoint and forced them to return to SDF-held territory.
