Looked it up and apparently the best you could hope for was heraldic patterns and insignias on the shield/clothing, and like... if you think about it, that'd still be confusing as fuck because:
Fuck knows how many noble houses woulda been walking around with blue stripes on white or red stripes on white (argent, whatever) and Fuck knows how many different noble houses were involved in a given battle, and all of their troops would be dressed differently.
3 counts and a baron vs the duke and 2 counts and you've got 7 patterns/insignia to keep track of, with no standardized uniforms to speak of. What a fucking mess. Now imagine you're a serf for one of the 3 counts and he's from a branch family of the duke fighting for his claim to the duchy and they've both got basically the same fucking heraldry.

This is why I wanted to found the Holt-Mabier Institute for Retard Science (haha get it - holt-mabier... "hold my beer"), which evolved into the Holt-Mabler Institute that sploo founded. Alas, he's gone too soon, and Holt-Mabler never really got off the ground.
(To be clear, I mean I wanted to found it for stuff like "how do liserds respond to weed smoak" not grant money, but in hindsight my priorities were probably in the wrong place.)
