Originally posted by Ajax User stories, that’s what I was trying to think of. We are going through a massive multi-year multi-campus overhaul of our core systems and processes and there are so many user stories. I’m on the end-user side of things actually doing the day-to-day business stuff, but I’m considered a “subject matter expert” plus a bunch of other jargon for what it’s worth, so I can appreciate the nature and the need for translation. The consultants who are writing the bulk of the code have no idea how we run our business, nor do I have any idea how they write their code. I have a couple main points of contacts who I go to and they translate my needs and defect reports and what not to the people who can resolve it in a way they can understand it.
That massive divide between end-user and coder is narrowing by the day.
In the near future, there will either be fewer programmers, or fewer end-users on the business side describing what they need the software to do. These jobs will eventually merge into one.
Agile methodology is making a pretty good effort at singularizing all of these tasks. "Acceptance criteria", "User stories", Etc.
A common "Rosetta Stone" type of intermediary is arising.
Also, now-a-days they're teaching kids to code and everything. It's pretty much the future. -

That sounds like a legitimate origin story for the merging of the Totse/Zoklet universe with a site like DH.
Anything either unmoderated, or at least loosely moderated / reasonably moderated, is a fertile breeding ground for Totsean types. -

Originally posted by Flatulant_bomb I dabbled in the BBS days, then found Yahoo! chat, that was fun. Then I found DH as my marriage ended, good times! Tell me about Totse and Zoklet
Totse was a host site for all kinda of controversial text files: pyrotechnics, drug syntheses, conspiracy theories, etc.
But it attracted all kinds of people, from all walks of life.
It was basically a place for Internet misfits.
4chan and all that attract a vaguely similar type, but in a more "normie" kinda way. They call everyone normies, but technically, Totseans were super-non-normie.
Then one day, out of the blue "Jeff Hunter", the administrator of Totse.com, decided to shut things down. There were all kinds of conspiracies about him being a fed, etc. Ultimately, Zok took on the much needed role of Totse-like site host. But then a few years later, Zok had some kind of meltdown, and so therehence went Zoklet.com.
Then, there was a massive void.
Since Lanny posted on Zoklet, and had the know-how and dedication to maintain a forum, NIS was born.
Then, when bored aging Totseans go googling out of nostalgia, they stumble upon NIS (I think I found it via reddit - r/totse). -

Originally posted by -SpectraL I remember a few mornings there where homeless people were found outside frozen solid. Like, stuck to fences and doorways like statues.
Holy fuck, that doesn't even surprise me for some reason.
I have a lot of sympathy for homeless people, but why would ANY voluntarily live somewhere like Ottawa (especially during the Winter). I'd probably rather live in the bushes around the Great Lakes or something like that. Although, even there it gets cold. Fuck it all, I'd hitchhike to Florida or something. -

You probably have the longest-standing connection to Totse and the like over anyone else here. I originally signed up on Totse's forums in 2004, after lurking for about a year. But that was still post-BBS days. I doubt many regular posters here go that far back.
Panthrax/Grimace is definitely an original Totsean.
There are a few others, but not many. -

2018-12-05 at 4:11 AM UTC in Sublingual sucroseI am not personally a pharmacist.
Psychopharmacology is a hobby/interest of mine though.
But it isn't really the 'pharmacology' of sucrose, but more the gustatory experience. The whole idea of a "sugar high" is, I think, some kind of myth invented by parents everywhere to describe their hyperactive kid after they drank some kool-aid. -

Originally posted by Lanny Even in the best case where everyone has the opportunity to put their ideas forward and you do so, you're donating your creative/intellectual efforts to your employer without compensation, or perhaps for an unsure possibility of advancement.
That's very true.
But I, personally, enjoy the rush of making bold suggestions at work.
For one thing, unless what I'm working on is 100% customer-facing, I use python. I don't care what language they want it in. I give them code that does what they want it to do, but I do it in python. And, luckily, most of the work they have me do isn't customer facing, so I have that freedom.
Like, as an example, they needed an AWS Lambda script to automatically search for and remove test/dummy Cognito users. The company generally uses JS/Node, but I was like "nobody but me has to actually see this code, so..." and I just wrote it in python.
I mean, I know JS, and other languages of course, but Python is like executable pseudocode. If I want to get from idea to functioning code, python is by far the quickest route. -

Originally posted by Flatulant_bomb It was a date site with forums. It was owned by one guy back when dating sites first started. He sold it to a group of investors at the right time. When those investors realized that the market was saturated they kind of stepped back and it became a forum free for all. It got pretty crazy with the law getting involved in some circumstances. Some even went to jail, so I hear. I did meet som good people from there though.
I have to admit, that's kind of a cool story. The merging of two online worlds like that.
Otherwise, the whole spirit of Totse would have died out years ago.
Some might argue that it already did, but Lanny keeps it alive with NIS. -

Yeah I have no desire to go back to Ottawa (at least for no longer than maybe a few days to visit some family and a few friends). But not mid-summer, nor mid-winter. Those are my conditions. -

But the grass is always greener. That's why those people would apparently welcome snow and cold. -

It's kind of a neat unfolding of events though that the members of such a site ended up merged with a bunch of Totseans.
It's an interesting match, -
