Anybody who has proven themselves trustworthy of having, at least, the capability to post quality content, will be allowed to enter and post about whatever topic they like.
Membership would NOT be exclusive, and I'd imagine most posters should be allowed in. Could even be like the word game where its as simple as opting in after xxx posts. If you're shit posting in there, you get removed.
But then, of course, the quality of the rest of the site would go down. And then everything would be shit, but its already shit, so it'd only be double, even triple shit. Just shit from the neck down, head to toes, covered completely and totally in shit and nothing but.
A blanket member whitelist isn't even all that necessary.
If we had enough traffic to warrant it, then it would make sense to assign moderators to the subforums. Right now, I don't know how reasonably necessary that would be.
Back on Totse when I was a regular poster there (2004-2008), order was maintained pretty well.
The kind of threads you get in SG, B&M, and HB here and now are not all that different from back then (for the most part, at least).
And you could really have your cake and eat it too; at least, in the sense that some posters would shitpost and be silly and post memes and whatnot in the more general forums (SG, B&M, and HB), but also engage in serious discussion in the topical subforums.
It worked really well, and I believe it could here as well.
It's just that there's a hard-to-quantify tipping point where the activity really warrants assigning moderators to delegate the responsibility of maintaining order.
The topical subforums only get a couple new threads, and a handful of new posts/replies, per day, and that's even on a particularly busy day. Moderators would likely be overkill. -

Is there a discernible difference between, say, Smirnoff and Greygoose?
There's a substantial price disparity, so I imagine there must be a difference.
But since I don't much care for vodka, it all just tastes the same to me.
I can definitely distinguish between a low-end, blended, non-aged Scotch and an aged single malt.
Is it the same kind of thing with Vodka? -

I used to go there all the time and just collect receipts off the ground and get free Whoppers all the time.
Eventually they banned me and my friend from there.
Imagine being banned from Burger King. -

I think it's just because when I was a lot younger and first starting drinking, it was ALWAYS the go to liquor.
Especially with my Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian friends.
One day I was like "nuh uh, y'all get your potato spirits, I'm drinking either beer or cider."
These days the only spirits I drink are single malt Scotch (when I can afford it / on occasion).
Other than that, it's either beer, cider, or sometimes wine.
No vodka. -

I use different colored highlighters to denote different degrees of importance of certain passages, or to otherwise guide how to interpret the paper upon subsequent readings. Then I also jot a few things down in the margins.
I'm trying to entirely transition this system to a computer-based workflow to reduce paper clutter and for easy storage of, and categorization, of notes.
But, then, sometimes I like to go to a coffee shop or a bar/pub or something like that just to switch things up. If I'm trying to wrap my head around a chunk of code in a language I'm not super well-versed in, for example, I might actually just print out some source code and just go over it with a highlighter and ballpoint pen to make sense of it while I'm having lunch, coffee, or a beer somewhere. -

I am an habitual / pathological multitasker, so I have a lot of books I'm currently reading...
One is "The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Chemistry". It's pretty much just for review, because it's been a few years since I took any chemistry classes, but I wanna brush up.
I'm also itching to read "Gödel, Escher, Bach", but it's long and I have a short attention span so I keep putting it off, but it's at the top of my books-to-read stack.
The last book I read any significantly long sequences from without reaching maximum ADD mode and putting it down was Heidegger's "Being and Time". Damn that book is a trip. Pretty fucking dense, though. Not exactly light reading.
Admittedly, it was mostly for a class, but I read a bit past the required reading sections because it's some heavy shit. -
