2019-07-16 at 4:41 AM UTC in Getting drunk for free without drinking!
Originally posted by DietPiano https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-auto-brewery-syndrome-22478
Auto-brewery syndrome is a rare condition, first discovered in the 1940s, in which a person experiences alcohol intoxication by creating alcohol in their own body. These individuals do not drink alcohol, yet their body produces alcohol through “abnormal gut fermentation,” which basically means that their body makes alcohol out of regular food and drinks containing carbohydrates by fermenting it in the transverse colon with yeast or bacteria that live in that part of the body.
The condition is also sometimes called “endogenous ethanol fermentation.”
This is pretty fascinating as a medical marvel, but it sounds absolutely horrendous for a whole variety of reasons.
I mean, for one thing, can these people ever legally drive?
I also imagine the potential for some GI tract discomfort.
I'd much rather be able to decide when I'm gonna be drunk than to have it thrust upon me. -

The world is fucking collapsing in realtime
I just assumed you'd be back, I just didn't know what username to expect.

Originally posted by GGG The doctors say you have terminal cancer, and that it has spread too far for you to be saved. They give you a maximum of three years left to live. You are making a respectable salary of 50k a year and can afford to travel a bit, but not buy a boat or do anything ridiculous.
What would you do? Like, really think about it. What would be on your hole in your bucket list? You can only pick so many things with this limited amount of time. What's the best way to spend it?
In this case, I'd try to do some traveling. Not sure exactly where yet, but probably some places of historical significance in Europe, Asia, and the middle east.
I'd also probably try some things like scuba diving and wingsuit flying.
Assuming I'm still single, I wouldn't really feel right trying to seek out someone to marry only to burden them with the inevitable grief, but I would try to engage in some social interaction beyond my current NEET-like routine.
I would still consider a drug binge towards the end if I'm single and without a family and so on. Not totally sure yet though if I'd do that. If the cancer symptoms are significant, then that would influence the decision. -

Originally posted by GGG I used to agree, but now I just feel like it would be shitty. Imagine choosing to spend your last days in the same cycle you fought so hard to get out of. Because what, you want to be happy and content for your last days on Earth? Not me. I want to do shit. I would sell everything I have and use it to go to all the places I want to go and do all the things I want to do. It's a stereotypical answer but lord, the idea of getting on opiates just to be comfortable as you waste away is REALLY depressing.
Actually that is a pretty good point. Maybe I chose too haphazardly.
There are a lot of variables that might impact the decision such as exactly how many days I have left, how much resources (financial, etc) I have at my disposal, if I have any loved ones I'd want to spend some time with, if I'm experiencing any symptoms of whatever it is that is killing me, etc. -

True, and I do take that into consideration before talking about any of my past transgressions, but a few grand here and a few grand there from like 15+ years ago... I'm not an expert on statutes of limitations and all that, for Canada or any country for that matter, but I'm like 99% sure I'm outside of any such statutes for such relatively trivial financial crimes.
And the ATM skimmer never even worked out. -

Quite possibly.
But I guess, to be honest, I'm kinda glad it didn't go as I was hoping, because then I might have ended up embracing the lifestyle entirely and never end up finding the "righteous path".
But if I ever find myself in possession of a time machine, maybe I'd be down anyway.
It was kind of fun, to be quite honest. -

Originally posted by mmQ What would you say is ALLEDGEDLY the worst crime you've committed that you're willing to allegedly admit?
Well, in terms of financially motivated crimes, I guess when I was running my check printing operation would be among the more serious, since I was bilking check cashing businesses out of thousands of dollars.
Then there was the ATM skimmer I was working on like 17 years ago, but it never materialized due to a temporary falling out with the business partner (we were estimating a potential payout of anywhere between $100,000 to a full million in the best case scenario). -

No, but not out of being particularly law-abiding, and moreso out of sheer luck I suppose.
For example, I did get caught shoplifting once, but I had handed the item I stole off to my friend seconds before loss prevention surrounded us, and so after the cops arrived and searched us, while they found the item I stole, and had video footage of me taking it off the shelf and putting it into my pocket, they couldn't officially prove that it was the same box of pills.
And that's just one of several examples. -

This would literally be the only conceivable scenario in which I would do such a thing, though.
