I also understand it depends on the demand for what you have can make a difference too.
they literally take advantage of people in desperate situations. It's better to come out of the pawnshop with at least enough to make a payment on whatever is due (say your lights) so you either take the money and make a payment on what ever is due or off goes your lights.

Funny enough I do have a cousin who runs a pawn shop in CO but I haven't talked to him in many years, I'm not like, defending pawn shops because of some family ties or whatever.
I don't disagree that in essence, they end up taking advantage of people in desperate spots, very similar to payday loans. It's a double edged sword because the person in desperate need for money is either gonna get a little bit of money for a shitty value, or they don't use the pawn shop and get no money at all.
At the end of the day, people are gonna wind up tight on cash for any number of reasons, and there's always gonna be a need for these types of places to exist. So while we can say they're taking advantage of people, those very people know it.
Is it any different than McDonald's taking advantage of people on a tight budget and offering dollar menu trash as if to suggest they're getting a good deal? A person could buy hamburger and make 5x as many burgers on their own but McDonald's does it for you and takes advantage of your laziness. Who's to say the will of God wasn't for one to take his or her own life? It's awfully convenient when anyone dies in any type of tragic accident, well 'oh I know I'm so sorry but God has a plan and that was part of the plan' essentially to say that yes, God intentionally caused the car accident that let your girl needlessly suffer in pain for 12 hours while she slowly died, because it's HIS PLAN. He knows.
