2019-01-21 at 2:01 PM UTC in Count Dankula demonetizedNo it certainly hasn't been the norm. But like evolution, there's a reason - at least in our short histories- that free speech has always emerged at the other end of whateverthefuck. At the very least it's a guiding ideal. That's not the case everywhere

2019-01-21 at 1:21 PM UTC in Count Dankula demonetizedIt was never the majority that did that. There's reason why it's been passed down through historical record. It was something which we pretty collectively realized "we" had fucked up on. And the ultra religious minority is the same now as ever. But it's the minority.

I don't know, how far do you think Muslims in the West should be able to go?
1) for most of its history, the western world has affirmed its belief in the importance of the right to free speech. The fact that we're in the middle of our cringeworthy teenage years doesn't take away from that fact.
2) Good point. My inclination is to say fuck them, but that's mostly because when they say something, I know their intention is to hurt people. If I heard a conservative saying that trans people should be rounded into detention facilities and slaughtered, I'd fee the same way. If Jonathan swift had had a history of infanticide and cannibalism, he might've been in trouble. Maybe I'm too high to articulate properly, but it's kind of a potter Stewart situation. I know free speech when I see it. -

Originally posted by HTS Playing Devil's Advocate here, but… you're already making caveats, I see. Not all speech is free speech. Even by your standards. So why should your speech be free speech? Why should Dank's? Whether he meant to or not, his video made Nazism funny and adorable. He made Nazism palatable. Using your speech to soften the rough edges of speech that calls for violence - should that be protected? If the Nazis had a PR team who never explicitly said we should gas the jedis, or did say it but then pretended it was a joke - would that be free speech? His interviews with Tommy Robinson were attempts to humanize him and put a less evil face on the racist far right. He has a pretty clear history of supporting far right fascist views. Why should he be free to support and defend people who actively call for violence? 🤔
Well I'm not making the caveat. It's one that already exists. I feel like no matter what you say, it's up to the listener to translate that thought into action. The speaker didn't choose to take their own body and stab the offending party. But the listener did. That's a distinction that - at least in America- we've already made. And in most (most) cases, it's not difficult for it to be applied fairly. If a hardcore kid with no history of "problematic behavior", says some stupid shit, it's weighed one way. If someone who has a lengthy history of explaining the jedis as the cause of world strife, and spitting on old men outside the jedi community center- were to say the same thing, it has a different weight. You still can't know intention for sure, but you can pretty safely infer. Not to mention, when you're having anything to do with something that's a meme, trying to hold someone to account for the explicit meaning of those words is...fucking weird. But I wouldn't expect the people in positions of power in the judicial branches to understand any of that. It's basically irl shitposting. -

That may have come off catty, but tbh I'm just high and that seemed hilarious in my head. But I'm a let it ride, because I'm a man, and men say things without concern for reality and whether someone's feelings will be badly hurt. -

Why the fuck should there be "consequences" for speech that doesn't actively call for violence against anyone else? It was clear that wasn't even close to his intent.
The fact that a lot of people are retarded (or just too tired of working two jobs and being bludgeoned over the head with political correctness all day) and don't bother to ponder the logical conclusions of all the whiny feely bullshit they've had crammed down their throats doesn't mean that they honestly believe that others people's lives should be ruined because they said a thing and someone else's feelings got hurt. -

Originally posted by I saw a soaking wet homeless girl crouched in front of the 7/11 bawling her eyes out the other day, so I gave her a $20 and told her to go across the street and buy herself a bowl of soup and a sandwich, and when I handed the $20 over, she asked, "You wouldn't happen to have another $20 on you, would you, Sir?"
I've had a lot of experiences like the ones you described. That said, I've also been a heroin addict for 13 years. So I know that sometimes, even if they don't spend the money on what you want them to, it doesn't mean they weren't in trouble and that they didn't need your help. I've never actively scammed anyone like that- I was usually a bit more industrious. Even so though, a handful of people went out of their way to help me, and to their eyes, I was probably just playing them in whatever direction would cause me the last amount of stress t the moment. I might've convinced them that I was serious about turning my life around and starting fresh, all so I could stay in their garage and shoot dope. I knew I wasn't ready, but I knew that I would get into an even worse predicament if I stayed in my car for another 6 months. Essentially they just kept me alive until I could start breathing on my own again.
I mean I always Felt compelled to help people. And that feeling of "being taken advantage of" feels like shame and weakness in the pit of your stomach. Like how could you have been so stupid to be manipulated like that. But it's really nothing else to do with you. They have to go on and live their sad lives. The minute you stop feeling compassion and empathy for people in trouble is the day the assholes win.
I was driving in the rain one day, and seeing as my car Was a hunking pile of shit, I know the stress of being stranded and stuff, so I carry around a toolkit and 5gal of gas in the back, for if I run across someone in trouble, and it's something basic that me with my know-nothing mechanic skills can fix (i.e. Loose terminals, jump start, flat tire, etc). So I see this black dude standing in the rain on the street just outside a gas station.... with his car door open and a tiny .5 gal gas can in his hand, trying to flag down cars. One out of like every 50 cars stops and gives him a tiny bit of change. So I want to do a good thing, so I pull behind him and go to my trunk and grab my gas can, and walk it over to him. He turns around and does the same "Hey sir how you doin? I'm just havin some problems right now, tryna get home out the rain but I'm out of gas. If you could spare a few dollars or something..." And I tell him I'm broke as fuck, but I carry around some gas to help people in a bad spot. And he looks at it a second and says "Oh nah I'm good. Thank you tho." And I'm kinda confused and I'm like "I'm just giving it to you" And he seems like he's having trouble thinking of something to say, and then he says, kinda annoyed almost "Nah I ain't usin' that one". Slowly I kinda figured out what was going on. And then of course I parked behind him and warned people off when they tried to give him money. But that was just my angry gut reaction. Lol.
And it never made we want to stop helping people. -

Originally posted by We'reAllBrownNosers Most of them are incorrigible idiots, sociopaths. Not really worth helping, but I have this habit of finding drugs and money on the ground, sometimes lots. That's when I actually enjoy helping these animals. Found a wallet with 160$ in it once, returned it. The guy gave me all the money because he was so grateful someone returned it. So I helped a few of these dipshits out. I felt better returning the wallet, because the owner was a genuinely good person as far as I could tell. I found a 20$ on the ground the other day, and this crazy homeless guy came up to me and asked me for a cigarette a couple hours later, so I gave him a 10$ and pointed him towards the store. It was freezing out, so I figured he'd just buy some cigarettes and hotdogs or whatever. He went into the store and stole a bunch of stuff lol
Probably bought meth or crack with the money.
I have this idea of making and selling things to homeless people. Wind-proof arc lighters, cheap FM/AM radios and such, stuff crackheads and meth-heads can use, and most homeless smoke cigarettes or cigars. That way I'd actually be helping them instead of just selling them drugs like everyone else does. Corporations ( and drug dealers ) make a shit-ton of money from homeless people. I might as well take their money. I know a lot of homeless meth-heads that sometimes steal things I might want but not want to pay so much money for. If I ever needed thieves, I could recruit them, make them better thieves. Get em off the street for a while maybe
This is true. Homeless customers miraculously come up with $50 or more each and every day, rain or shine. Sometimes $100 or more. It's not that they don't have money and no home. They're adept at making money. It just all goes to drugs. -
