I just seen a 'homeless' man standing at an intersection with a sign that says 'Hungry- 50 cents will help, $$'

I saw this. it's insane. It's a passable excuse to say "If you feed them, they will come back like feral cats for milk"

they use that law with threats of serious fines or even being Jailed if you violate it. NYC got real clean when Giuliani got in as Mayor. A lot of people love him for this but I also hear the city union guys hate him .. LOTS!

When I felt like giving, rather than give them money, I'd buy them lunch at a fast food place. Hand them a McDouble. Unless times changed, can't buy crack with that!

whats the point of prolonging their suffering ?

if you give them food, they'll suffer another agonizing day.

    if however,

you buy them drugs, they'll be happy for another few hours.

Found a wallet with 160$ in it once, returned it. The guy gave me all the money because he was so grateful someone returned it. So I helped a few of these dipshits out. I felt better returning the wallet, because the owner was a genuinely good person as far as I could tell. I found a 20$ on the ground the other day, and this crazy homeless guy came up to me and asked me for a cigarette a couple hours later, so I gave him a 10$ and pointed him towards the store. It was freezing out, so I figured he'd just buy some cigarettes and hotdogs or whatever. He went into the store and stole a bunch of stuff lol

Probably bought meth or crack with the money.

I have this idea of making and selling things to homeless people. Wind-proof arc lighters, cheap FM/AM radios and such, stuff crackheads and meth-heads can use, and most homeless smoke cigarettes or cigars. That way I'd actually be helping them instead of just selling them drugs like everyone else does. Corporations ( and drug dealers ) make a shit-ton of money from homeless people. I might as well take their money. I know a lot of homeless meth-heads that sometimes steal things I might want but not want to pay so much money for. If I ever needed thieves, I could recruit them, make them better thieves. Get em off the street for a while maybe

This is true. Homeless customers miraculously come up with $50 or more each and every day, rain or shine. Sometimes $100 or more. It's not that they don't have money and no home. They're adept at making money. It just all goes to drugs.

I've had a lot of experiences like the ones you described. That said, I've also been a heroin addict for 13 years. So I know that sometimes, even if they don't spend the money on what you want them to, it doesn't mean they weren't in trouble and that they didn't need your help. I've never actively scammed anyone like that- I was usually a bit more industrious. Even so though, a handful of people went out of their way to help me, and to their eyes, I was probably just playing them in whatever direction would cause me the last amount of stress t the moment. I might've convinced them that I was serious about turning my life around and starting fresh, all so I could stay in their garage and shoot dope. I knew I wasn't ready, but I knew that I would get into an even worse predicament if I stayed in my car for another 6 months. Essentially they just kept me alive until I could start breathing on my own again.

I mean I always Felt compelled to help people. And that feeling of "being taken advantage of" feels like shame and weakness in the pit of your stomach. Like how could you have been so stupid to be manipulated like that. But it's really nothing else to do with you. They have to go on and live their sad lives. The minute you stop feeling compassion and empathy for people in trouble is the day the assholes win.

I was driving in the rain one day, and seeing as my car Was a hunking pile of shit, I know the stress of being stranded and stuff, so I carry around a toolkit and 5gal of gas in the back, for if I run across someone in trouble, and it's something basic that me with my know-nothing mechanic skills can fix (i.e. Loose terminals, jump start, flat tire, etc). So I see this black dude standing in the rain on the street just outside a gas station.... with his car door open and a tiny .5 gal gas can in his hand, trying to flag down cars. One out of like every 50 cars stops and gives him a tiny bit of change. So I want to do a good thing, so I pull behind him and go to my trunk and grab my gas can, and walk it over to him. He turns around and does the same "Hey sir how you doin? I'm just havin some problems right now, tryna get home out the rain but I'm out of gas. If you could spare a few dollars or something..." And I tell him I'm broke as fuck, but I carry around some gas to help people in a bad spot. And he looks at it a second and says "Oh nah I'm good. Thank you tho." And I'm kinda confused and I'm like "I'm just giving it to you" And he seems like he's having trouble thinking of something to say, and then he says, kinda annoyed almost "Nah I ain't usin' that one". Slowly I kinda figured out what was going on. And then of course I parked behind him and warned people off when they tried to give him money. But that was just my angry gut reaction. Lol.

And it never made we want to stop helping people.
