It's not so much a dumbing down thing as it is... just using the words I think people expect to hear? It's basically "code switching", except I'm white and so are you. I dunno. There's a bunch of different ways of speaking and I don't know if any of them are dumber than the others. In all honesty: this started life as a PM to someone who speaks Bri'ish, but I was like "nah fuck it this'd be funnier as a thread" and so I just copy-pasted it to here.
If I've done the same before, it is also likely because I was trying to communicate with someone who'd call it petrol IRL. Also I specifically don't like saying "huffing gas" because I am autistic and it sounds like I'm talking about huffing some non-specific gaseous thing, so I'd probably default to "huffing gasoline" in conversation with you if we were talking about it. Honestly though, I dunno: my dad is from Liverpool and I grew up hearing British words/pronunciations a lot, so they feel pretty interchangeable to me - he calls it petrol and pronounces "garage" as "gare-edge".The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
