That can take decades to kill a mother fucker off. Women lived for 30-40 years after being on the island with the ashes raining down. they thought it was snow at first but then they said it was like soap. and it lathered up and they were showering with the radioactive "soap" ash and all got thyroid cancer some weeks later. but lived for decades with it. it did cause TED (Thyroid Eye Disease) and caused many of them to get tired and gain weight. a lot of Polynesian women back then were not overweight. some got tumors and died but most lived.
I got to find the video about it. its really sad. The US Government purposly tested radiation effects on "Savage islanders" and even the Army film calls the guy from the Island a Savage. WTF it's 1950 not 1700s Captain Cook.
