Russia has been growing for the last 600 years, and has basically spent the last 600 years in a constant series of wars in order to do so.
It is a militaristic culture, with paranoid babushka fascism the guiding principle. Basically the idea is "we have to invade other places before they come for us." Like they said about Rome, they conquered the world in self defense.

Interesting stuff about the secret negotiations before all this started. Zelensky more or less let Russia invade, either he didn't think Russia would invade, or he just didn't care.
