   Hey, you and me both. I agree that maybe the whole industry could do with a whole paradigm shift... But in the meantime, I just feel an obligation to tip AT LEAST the standard 15%, but usually more (although that extra is my own personal choice; I wouldn't look down on anybody for tipping less than I do, as long as they give SOMETHING reasonable).
   
   And I'm sure you get that to some extent, having worked in that kind of atmosphere.

    But as things stand, tipping is just kinda customary.
    
    I actually tend to overly tip, if anything. I guess part of it is that I like to feel like a big shot. I mean, I pretty much guarantee that the local neighbourhood servers all know me and say "hi" everytime I walk in. Maybe that's a stupid reason to tip well, but it's one among many reasons I tip well.
    
    Another reason is that any kind of kitchen job can be stressful, whether in the front or the back. I did some behind the scenes kitchen work briefly (dishwasher, etc), and it was brutal (especially considering the hourly pay rate), but I can't imagine serving customers being all that much easier.
