World's most unethical experiment, but yes, it would be utterly fascinating.

The closest thing in real life to that to have happened is the discovery of poor Genie. The girl was confined to a single room for the entire duration of her formative years. She never learned language. She interacted with nobody (although she would see her parents, who fed her and all that).

It would be quite a stretch to propose that most animals are not conscious for example, a Cartesian view.

I have to agree that some animals might be conscious (albeit in a more limited sense than we are).

On this line especially, I have no answer to that. In fact, that's pretty much the very crux of the hard problem, from what I understand.

It's hard to take a firm position either way on the matter, because we have no instruments that can "detect/measure" subjective experience.

I want to return to my advanced AI analogy... If we replicate the entire human brain digitally, and then upload a whole slew of information to it (in a sense, feeding it a couple decades worth of life experience that a biological human might have), then, at that point, will consciousness / a subjective experiencer emerge?

I think such an advanced AI would even circumvent Searle's Chinese Room argument. The machine would actually have conceptual understanding of any information given to it... I think, at least. I'm only speculating here.

I'm still crushing on Sailor Socialism.

    Anyone got her digits?

Maybe a Twitter account or e-mail address?

Oh man, this thread is reminding me of this one time I was at a bar many years ago and started hitting on this chick. She had an exotic look to her, so I asked her where she's from.

She said Polynesia. This was like 15 years ago, I wasn't the well-rounded scholar that I am now, so I was drawing a blank as to where exactly it was on the globe.

So I inquired, "what continent is it in?"

    She responded with, "none."

I was utterly perplexed, because it never occurred to me that a piece of land could NOT be part of any continent.

Me being my stubborn self, I kept insisting that there must be some kind of continent associated with it.

But she kept pushing the whole "no! Polynesia is NOT on any continent. Stop asking about that, and leave me alone." So I walked away.

Then a few minutes later, I felt bad for badgering her, so I wanted to appologize and buy her a drink and then proceed to leave her alone. But when I went to ask her what kind of drink she wanted, she got even more upset, and she ended up going to talk to one of the bouncers or something like that.

Luckily, I was a regular there and she was a nobody, so nothing came of it.

To this day, I'm still convinced that I wasn't 100% wrong. Every island, no matter how remote, must be on some kind of continent, right?

Do you have any evidence to support the claim that men and women are significantly different in that regard?

Mild tendencies don't count. I mean, you could argue that women are slightly more inclined towards nurturing roles, for example, but the differences are relatively weak.

So, essentially, Obbe's position could extend to any entity that can process their environment symbolically.

That is a really good point.

But, one could argue that even some feral child raised by wolves who never learns to speak could have a symbolic understanding of their environment, and symbols are a type of language.

Man that is fucking awesome. I'm working on a somewhat revolutionary chemical database that will store information just like in that image. I'm too fucked up right now to get into the technical details, but it's a major project.

Are you legit the original Sploo/Sphlew? (Sorry, I have no idea how your username was or is meant to be spelled).

I did a few bumps of ketamine and am taking some nitrous hits here and there (it's like double dissociation).

Dissociatives seem to be an incredibly unique type of drug.

I am of course aware of the BLTC subforum, but I am posting this here because this isn't strictly about dissociatives. I want to learn more about the dissociative users on this site. I can't be the only person to have noticed the rampant dissociative use around here.

I was away from the Totse/Zoklet/NiS universe for a while during the late Zoklet and early NiS years, but I have been regaled and informed of all kinds of dissociative lore.

Sploo (sp?) was apparently really into high plateau bundy trips.

Mashlehash... I'm pretty certain dissociatives are among his main drugs of choice.

We even have an NiS banner about "bundy". And speaking of, there's the word enhancement that converts DXM to bundy.

And is Trianglism a result of dissociative speculation?

The whole concept of alts and plural identities is eerily similar to the psychiatric condition of Dissociative Identity Disorder (i.e. split personalities).

Why is dissociation such a prominent theme around here? It is embedded in the cultural fabric of NiS.

I currently find myself experimenting again with dissociatives, and it is unlike any other experience (chemically induced or otherwise).

Essentially, what I'm seeking here, are some stories about folks like Sploo and Roshambo (literallly Dissociator for a username... I think?).

    And all the others.

And I'm borderline k-holing right now so I am having an incredibly diffcult time interpreting everything.

DAMNIT Y U HAVE TO DO THIS RIGHT NOW...

I want to type out a personalized response to truly motivate you to overcome whatever transient/impermanent issue is plaguing you right now, but I'm all kinds of fucked up on dozens of chemicals so I can't do it right.

All I can say at the moment is...

    DON'T. FUCKING. DO IT.

If anything, at least give me a chance to sober up and I can help you.

There's literally always a solution to any problem.

I personally called every single intergalactic bus station and issued a code red.

    No buses means no death.

You literally, physically, cannot board any bus, since they aren't running right now.

    Give it some time.

I'll be back tomorrow morning with a clear head and I'll drop wisdom bombs that can fix anything. It's what I do.

    Hang in there.

I drink to reduce my general anxiety and what I am beginning to speculate might be a creeping species of psychosis.

    I also drink because:
    1. It makes me more sociable.
    2. It eases the transition into sleep (otherwise I get really bad insomnia).

Other drugs, either simply because they feel good, or, in some cases, for the purposes of self-improvement and/or personal growth.

Then there are times I'll take certain drugs (like hallucinogens, dissociatives, etc) simply to feel different. Not necessarily better, just different.
