2019-08-07 at 2:49 AM UTC in Can we just admit that the Mossad is gangshit?I know next to nothing about Mossad, but I do remember many years ago reading about a (female) Israeli spy (Mossad I presume...?) who seduced a target and extracted incredibly valuable Intel from them.
It was like some James Bond movie type shit. -

That would be very reasonable, but:
1. It might actually represent a legitimate case of discrimination. It's not a cause I myself would bother with, as I am sure there are places where one can go to get male genitalia waxed. But it might be indicative of something.
2. I read somewhere in that kiwifarms thread that the bikini waxxers actually responded with "ew no". I don't know, I wasn't there.
But anyway, the main point here is that this whole fiasco doesn't really reflect on the entire nation of Canada.
Every country has its share of loons. -

After reading some more of that kiwifarms thread, yeah, the dude is all kinds of screwed up, but he may actually have stumbled upon a potential human rights edge case that needs to be examined further (with the whole genital waxing thing, not the other stuff).
Even batshit crazy people can occasionally have a legitimate point. -

Holy shit, that's my hometown. I went to the same uni as him (never heard of him/her/whatevs though).
But anyway, I'm not seeing where he actually won his lawsuit... How much of this do I have to actually read through to find that part? -

2019-08-06 at 1:19 AM UTC in Had a cluster B in my sightsJust the other night I was having one of those insomnia-induced multi-hour reminiscing sessions while tossing and turning in bed, entirely focused precisely on all the possible missed romantic opportunities that failed to materialize for one reason or another.
The first one that came to mind and sparked this whole mental session was when my family had this Swedish exchange student staying with us for a week or so. She was my age (I was ~20 at the time), and, aside from a bit more facial acne than the typical average, was pretty attractive.
I remember somehow stumbling upon her birth control pills... This was my first time ever seeing any such thing, but somehow I knew what I was looking at.
However, somehow I also knew at the time (or had heard somewhere at least) that birth control pills can sometimes be used strictly for severe acne.
So in my mind at the time, there was a 50/50 chance that she is sexually active.
One night, just the two of us were up late having a few drinks and talking, and I kinda wanted to make a move, but my natural shyness kinda prevailed and I never tried anything.
But the other night it had occured to me that she might have been explicitly looking to check some kind of international sexual experience off of the old bucket list, meaning that my chances might have been, in retrospect, even higher than I ever would have assumed at the time. -

Maybe.
It depends on how much domain knowledge and skill you bring from both programming and finance, and also where you set your expectations and what you truly hope to get out of it.
If you have a strong background in programming and at least some understanding of corporate finance and/or different trading markets, or the opposite, or even strong backgrounds in both, then I'd say... Why not give it a try?
The only thing is that, as others have mentioned in this thread already, you will pretty much be playing a game with casino-level odds, bringing with you only a very slight advantage over the average Joe/Jane without fancy algorithms to guide them.
You will be competing against enormous Wall Street firms with millions of dollars worth of computing power, and entire teams of PhD's in quantitative trading, economics, computer science, etc.
All that being said, I'm still working on developing some mini-projects in this area, but they are super low priority for me because I already know my odds of any bank breaking dividends are incredibly slim. For me, it's an educational experiment more than anything.
Even once you've selected a few specific metrics to guide your decision making (and there are A LOT to choose from), you will ultimately have to rely on intuition in the end for the final decision.
Try it if you want, but just don't expect to get bougie rich off of it.
The only way to do that is either start with millions of dollars, insider trading, or getting really really lucky. -
2019-08-05 at 7:11 AM UTC in Ever wonder why Republicans are so gullible?Ok guys guys guys...
This study is huge for a lot of reasons, but it's important not to get lost in some specific parameters of the study.
I saw this study mentioned recently (maybe earlier today? Not 100% sure) on Reddit, and it immediately caught my eye. I bookmarked it, and haven't scrutinized the entire article yet, but the abstract definitely has some far reaching implications.
BUT, this is not about any particular political side being more biased than the other. This phenomenon that they found does have major implications, but it's way wider in scope than just one particular political party.
The exact same effect would occur if a famous anti-vaxxer started touting pro-vaccination views, or a flat earther doing the same with other flat earthers, etc.
Cognitive bias is not particularly unique to any particular group (political affiliations included). -
