And the US and Canada almost went to war a few times over it. I think Toronto area was debated as being closer to the US and therefor should become apart of the USA while they (British owned Canada) and the USA fought for some time. Toronto region ended up in Canada while some of the western states like Montana and Washington (which was Oregon Territory as well as Idaho before becoming their own statehood for easier management). those states borders (which was Oregon) was pushed up and given to America in exchange for Toronto region. I think they found Coal and Iron (Steel eventually) in those parts of Canada in which the British claimed they wanted the minerals for their factories.
it wasn't just "Hear.. we draw this fucking line" and that settles that. took a few decades to dispute this shit out. probably more like a solid 100 years.
Ahh yes, the average American is simply confused about basic geography because of their deep education in the history of 18th and 19th century land deals brokered between the US and the British Empire. Easy mistake to make really, under the circumstances. -
