    you can use past data to make general predictions; I believe most major, monolithic cultures tend to follow the same patterns and make the same choices, but there are way too many forking paths to be able to use that data to model anything accurately past a certain point (maybe a few decades)… and that's not even touching the effects of emerging technologies.
