2015-08-29 at 9:59 PM UTC in Time difference sucks.I know that feel bro. Even just keeping a somewhat late schedule on the west coast means most of the internet is dead within an hour or two of me getting online.
Also at work we have an offshore team in india. I rarely have to interact with them thankfully but some of my coworkers have to call in at like midnight to catch them when they're awake. Shit is crazy, like I know indian programmers are cheap and all but it seems like between overworking your employees (and needing to compensate them for it since it's such a seller's market) and the lost efficiency of generally undertrained employees, communication issues, and synchronization problems I don't think it pays off at all. -

I tripped on 1p-lsd once and got hungry so I made a greek salad and as I was doing it I felt I was the patriarch of some minor grecian house on a remote island. I remembered coming home, enjoying the cool ionian breeze, living in a villa built into the steep hills of the islands. The poverty of my people, having but the olive orchards and a small fishing village yet the contented feeling of a life in line with my ancestors. I remember holding my wife, the deep slow sorrow when word reached us that our first son had died in the Macedonian war. All the elements of greek public life. All for the sake of a salad.
Salad tasted fucking delicious too. -
2015-08-29 at 5:42 AM UTC in Is Runescape the most complex MMORPG?I actually played a fuckton of runescape as a kid and I can say with confidence, there is nothing intellectual about it. It's 100% WoW level grindfest, literally the only reason for 3D in the game is to make botting more difficult. Combat is exclusively dice rolls, every skill takes crazy ass levels of grind to make even a base level of effective. The one thing I will say for it is that the was levels work min-maxing is actually useful but it takes about 5 minutes to figure out the appropriate min-max build for what you want to do.
Fuck, so many hours wasted on my stupid fucking pure fisher and now I still want to play again. Fuck runescape man, fuck it hard. -

2015-08-29 at 1:36 AM UTC in Teach me Perl niggasSo the canonical resource is "the camel book", or Programming Perl by Wall himself. That's where most crusty old perl hackers learned it. I can't really speak to how good it is, I've never read it. O'Reilly books tend to be dense and not particularly didactic but this might be an exception. I learned the language from this thing: http://www.cbkihong.com/download/perltut.pdf which is pretty straight forward, I liked it at least.
Perlmonks is always a good resource if you want to broaden your mind a bit, and they have tutorials, but honestly just the community there is, in my opinion, one of the real strengths of the language.
If you have questions about a particular piece of code feel free to post them. I can also give you the handful of folklore around the language, but if you're learning it for a specific project that probably wouldn't mean much. -
2015-08-28 at 5:41 PM UTC in What pills can I make?Yeah, the price difference between powder and pill RC benzos generally seems high enough that you might be able to turn a profit making caps and reselling a bulk order. The only press I've used was manual and pretty time consuming so it probably wouldn't pay off if the process is too involved/slow.

2015-08-28 at 4:54 PM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.
When i talk about minimum wage being bad i talk about cases where the government has set the minimum wage above what the market would normally correct for. So if in actuality the market dictates labor should cost 9 dollars an hour and the government sets the minimum wage at 12 dollars we have a problem. Here's the proof you requested.
But why is that situation an issue? Why do market pressures produce the optimum in that case? Automation is not the exclusive force that sets the market value of labor.
Assuming your argument is still "lower employment is bad, increasing the minimum wage above what the market would otherwise produce decreases employment, QED minimum wage is bad" then you have to demonstrate the second premise, why does a minimum above market significantly reduce rates of employment? Some portion of employers may opt to automate, some may be running on such a small profit margin that increasing the cost of operations that much makes them unprofitable but a higher minimum also increases employee incentive to enter the job market. So you seem to owe us an account both of why the former figure will outstrip the latter and why the difference is greater than the collective increase in earnings of the working class. -
2015-08-28 at 7:05 AM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.Well I was addressing your accusation that minimum wage is fascist, not wether or not it's a good policy in general. I'll assume you've given up on establishing that.
micromanage
"micromanage" is just a pointless slur that doesn't mean anything more than "some level of management I don't personally like".and regulate transactions between free individuals
Yeah, most people approve of regulation of transactions between people. The great sacred tenant of libertarianism that is property law requires regulation of transactions between individuals. -

2015-08-28 at 5:40 AM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.
In a kind of world where policies set by politicians dictate at what rate a business compensates its employees
It was a rhetorical question. There is no world where fascism means politicians are self interested because that's not what fascism means.well unions factor into it, too, because they get more dues from higher paid employees. There are lots of different groups colluding in the endemic corruption that festers within all huge bureaucracies.
I am all fucked up on etiz, hope I remember this tomorrow
But this still doesn't explain why minimum wage entails fascism or why it's a bad thing. Hitler himself could support minimum wage but that doesn't change the fact that it's good policy. Unions making a dime off higher paid employees (although I'm not sure there are any powerful unions representing minimum wage employees in america anymore) does exactly nothing to expose an issue with the policy itself. -

2015-08-28 at 5:21 AM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.
yeah, because the politicians consider the people and their plight when making decisions about minimum wage laws. I mean, that is obvious to everyone. Government is our friend.. they definitely aren't doing it solely as a barrier to entry to the competitors of the people who donated to their campaigns.
In what world does "politicians are self-interested" entail fascism?
Also the idea that minimum wage somehow exists as a political favor to big business is retarded. -

2015-08-28 at 4:36 AM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.
Minimum wage hurts investment and youth employment. Its not even debateable. If you want to increase domestic consumption of the lower class to think theyre better off at the expense of people who can actually grow the economy and people who want to enter it and gain skills then fuck it, go ahead
Yeah man, you're right, these proles just _think_ earning a living wage is a good thing. In reality they'd just be losing out by not struggling to make ends meet, dying earlier, eating worse, and being generally less happy. What fools are they to imagine literally dying from poverty isn't somehow actually working to their advantage. -
2015-08-28 at 4:30 AM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.
Free enterprise works. The more government regulation on it the more it resembles fascism.
Yeah, nothing screams fascism more than policy that aims to lift huge swaths of the working class out of poverty... -

2015-08-27 at 5:36 PM UTC in Why minimum wage is bad.The problem with laffer curve arguments and their ilk (like this anti-minimum wage argument) is that they always presume to know the shape of the curve and that we're on the suboptimal right side of the peak which, so far, we've been presented with absolutely no evidence of. An exhaustive list of things that could happen to employment rates if we increase minimum wage: they go down, they stay the same, they go up. The onus is on you to demonstrate why the former is the case. So far you've given us "employers will automate" which assumes that the tipping point for automation cost-efficiency is somewhere between the current and proposed minimum wage (although we don't even know what you think those are since they very place to place) AND that the cost of investment in automation is zero or trivial. Neither of these are obvious, in fact the latter is obviously false.
