Originally posted by Lanny The Soviet example of Democide in that article had nothing to do with famine. Really very little of what Stalin did can be considered an indictment of Marx but let's consider the to major causes of death during Stalin's reign.
The first was the purges whereby Stalin murdered his political opponents. I certainly don't condone that, it was squarely mass murder and can not be defended. It also had very little to do with communism. The purges took place after Stalin had come into power; whatever evidence we can find in Marx of advocacy of violence in a revolution it ends when the dictatorship of the proletariat is instituted. Stalin murdered his opponents and their supporters because he was insecure in his position, much the same way American capitalist politics periodically generates international conflicts as a means of economic stimulus. Stalin's purges were enabled by vesting the full power of the state in a single individual, but again, this has little to do with communism.
The other major source of Russian deaths typically and errantly laid at communism's feet is famine. The issue is more nuanced there, Stalin forcefully socialized agriculture which we can find support for in Marx. The process of prying the means of agricultural production away from what was a pseudo-capitalistic caste did involve murder but the major source of deaths is the ensuing famine that resulted from removing the best trained farmers and rancher from the farming and raching industries and the massive destruction of livestock and infrastructure that happened during collectivization. Marxism does call for collectivization but the famine station is the result a particular collectivization strategy (murder/imprison those who hold the means of production, replace with the untrained but politically pliant). Many, probably most, Marxists wouldn't condone Stalin's actions here either, preferring more gradual collectivization strategies. A stable worker state can leave a capitalistic industry intact and gradually "purchase" it out or otherwise take a scheduled approach of transferring the means of production to the collective domain.
Anyway, point is, learn the difference between Stalin and Marx.
User was banned for saying the taboo phrase "prison"!
Me again. Of my 6 victories I think 4 were these very type where I wasn't even involved whatsoever.
I actually forgot about this one. Prison. Haha.
Enjoy your PRISON. Kind of poetic? Whatever the term is. :) -

Normal if you're going to a meeting or to meet your kids teacher or something but when you put on your best shoes to go to a house party there's something a little off there.
For family it's usually a hug. A handshake with a family member seems kinda cold.
just got back from that party and i shaked like 2 hands
once after a game of pool, and once when i met someone
wait mayb eit was 3 hands
godamnit lanny i knew i was right about this hands shaking thing

it's also almost impossible to accurately attribute deaths via starvation to communism itself vs economic warfare against communism -
2018-01-07 at 2:49 PM UTCThese discussions always devolve into the gayest possible form of argument, i.e. "X isn't communism/capitalism's fault itself".
How about we discuss the principle merits of either system rather than the practical failures of implementation? -
