I never said the war was fought over slavery, just that it was an essential economic factor. -

The common implication today (not necessarily that you said it, but it's almost universal) is that the war was fought over the morality of slavery. If that article is correct (it seems to be cited fairly well), slavery specifically was of little importance; the north didn't care if the south wanted to keep slaves, their only real concern was keeping economic power through taxes and tariffs. -

I guess, but slavery *is* super essential to why they had economic problems in the first place. Massive propaganda campaign for people to fight against slavery is important too. That kind of shit is always used to rile people to fight. Something like 10% of the Union was black too. If you had phrased it slightly differently I wouldn't have gone autistic on you.
There's a book by Harry Turtledove that I've been wanting to read about the south winning the war. I think it's in the 1980's or something. Interesting concept. Would change politics dramatically. Too bad he's a shitty writer.
