These were the reasons for which Jean-Sacre lived and worked. And through dreams of agonized screams and perilous nightmares of grim vengeance, of God and hell and eternity and the anguish of their beloved, they were why he could sleep peacefully each night.
There was one other reason he could sleep peacefully though. That reason was Sullivan, a much more complicated man. A man who worked because there was nothing else in the world that occured to him or that he particularly lived for.
He enjoyed the idea of having things more than having them, and got disinterested in those things before he had the time to acquire them. They would chat often while they worked together and while Jean-Sacre could not call him his friend, they had developed an odd sort of relationship that he trusted.
On the surface, Sullivan did not appear an enigma at all. He was not closed-off in conversation, quite the opposite in fact. He was open and participative. But he subtly redirected all conversation away from himself. He didn't even know if Sullivan did it intentionally or if it was simply reflexive, but it was a skill Jean-Sacre had mastered himself.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -

It was an evening of white roses. The light shower that at first delayed their wedding had turned to a downpour that ruined it and settled in the mind of Yves a wager he had made with God.
So he drew from its gilded sheath the falchion of his grandfather, supposedly a man of great military merit. It had remained unused in its display cabinet for over 70 years, or so it had always been said. And so it was that his eyes grew wide to find upon its blade blood that had not been present when he had last seen it unsheathed two years earlier.
Then Ava turned from the window sooner than he had anticipated and for Yves, it was too late to hesitate for the sake of this new mystery.
And so it was with one long stroke from her hip, across her breast and through her shoulder, that white roses were struck a brilliant crimson.
He looked into her eyes as the light left them suddenly, like a candle extinguished. The look of confusion had no chance to depart her face but she was the one who broke their gaze, as her top half disconnected from her slumping torse.
Her blood pooled on the floor around her and its outflow gently formed unpredictable currents in the puddle, a long tail of smoke from a wick just extinguished.
"Ava!... YVES!"
It was Hector. Then met him next as he turned to face Hector, Hector's bronze club.

Depoends on the theatre/circumstance - China's military isn't top-shelf but it's effective enough and they have a serious numbers advantage over everyone. We're likely to see Russia transferring hypersonic missile tech to them soon though which will make things interesting. They're able to effectively defend their mainland and claimed territories largely thanks to missile complexes like the DF21b, but don't have any real way to employ their overwhelming numbers outside of Asia - boots on the ground win wars but aren't much good if you can't get them to the front. That's the main thing the US military still has going for it - global supply lines and ability to rapidly deploy anywhere in the world.
Russia's military is arguably the most effective in the world at the moment (after the intense modernisation projects of the last 10 years), but their doctrine is explicitly to be able to fight within Russia's borders or within 2000km of them, so large international deployments are out of the question. Tartus/Syria was actually a very small deployment for how successful it's been. That said, the next theatre is likely going to be within Europe where they're potentially able to deploy orders of magnitude more fully-equipped soldiers and armored divisions than NATO can in any given time period, even with the US' supply lines. More importantly they've been concentrating on technologies that neutralise US advantages, but I won't go into that because the most important thing is that in a direct conflict with a 'peer' like Russia or China where their mainland is threatened, they will almost immediately escalate to nuclear because that's where their biggest advantage is - specifically the submarine part of the triad.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
