Incident
On the 17/09, pagers started exploding across southern Lebanon. Hezbullah typically used these pagers to transmit one-way status updates, warnings of inbound strikes etc. to their soldiers and people in the community, and it was the specific brand and model Hezbullah preferred that were exploding. Roughly 3,000 people were hospitalised and 10 killed outright which flooded the Lebanese hospital system, prompting medical resources to be transferred from friendly countries such as Iran and Iraq.
Two days later, other devices began exploding as well, primarily portable ICOM-branded radios but there were also reports of various other items such as clock radios, portable solar chargers, remote access keypads and other personal electronics. This wave of explosions was smaller but more lethal – roughly 400 reported injured and another 10 or so killed.
Cause
The initial news reports, mostly citing anonymous US/israeli sources claimed that it was a cyberattack and that the israeli intelligence services had found a way to remotely detonate the lithium cells inside the pagers. This was obviously not true given the videos of explosions – they were high explosives, there were no major fires and no characteristic vapor/smoke, as well as the explosions themselves being too violent and consistent.
It was later leaked by the Lebanese investigation team (and ‘confirmed’ by anonymous israeli intelligence sources) that the pagers had been tampered with to contain around 20g of PETN explosive compound, and that the batteries had been shorted and overheated in order to detonate the PETN charge.
Attack Vector
Initially I assumed that the pagers themselves had their firmwares hacked to detonate upon receiving a certain code, but the later explosions in other devices makes this seem less likely.
The most likely attack vector is some kind of modular bomb built into the lithium cell – the attacker could remove the battery from the casing, put a smaller battery and triggering system (likely a small radio antenna that shorts the battery when receiving a specific frequency, as space would be too limited for decoding chips or anything like that) in the casing and fill the remainder of the void with PETN. With this kind of device an attacker could replace the lithium cell in any portable device with a hidden bomb without having to worry about software/firmware/circuitry in the device itself.
Supply Chain Attack
Before the second wave of attacks, analysis was focused on the pagers themselves – they were the AP-924 model manufactured by the APOLLO GOLD company in Taiwan, a model that was popular in the 2000s and still in use by hospitals and other critical centres that wanted a way to keep contact with staff if cellular networks failed.
APOLLO is now under investigation by the Taiwanese authorities and has released several statements relating to the AP-924 – specifically that they no longer manufacture the device themselves, and that they’ve licensed the design to a Hungarian consultancy firm, and the design has been changed since it was transferred.
The consultancy firm, BAC Consulting, appears to be some kind of front organisation as it only has one registered employee (a woman who appears to have had her identity stolen, as she published several academic papers on hydroelectric cells in the mid-2000s before re-emerging as a generic NGO volunteer in the 20202s), a website (now deleted) that says nothing about what the company does or any kind of manufacturing capability and annual cash inflows of $500,000+ since 2022. It stands to reason that this company or its subsidiaries were set up explicitly for this kind of sabotage.
As an aside, there are also reports that the manufacturer would not ship the batch of pagers directly to Lebanon, instead sending to Jordan where it was held by customs before being transferred on – leading to speculation that they could’ve been tampered with there.
HANDALA Hacks
A pro-Palestinian hacker group calling itself HANDALA claims to have hacked several israeli companies involved with this attack and will release evidence ‘in a matter of hours’.
They claim that the battery bombs were developed by Israeli Industrial Batteries in conjunction with Unit 8200, israel’s famed SIGINT/Electronic Warfare unit. According to them the explosive batteries were manufactured in israel, then shipped to Europe (specifically to the manufacturing plant affiliated with the aforementioned BAC) and implanted in the pagers and potentially other devices meant to be delivered to Lebanon (indicating that the sabotage was performed at the site of manufacture, not in customs in a transit country).
This, however calls into question how the Mossad was able to transfer large amounts of explosive into the EU and out again after assembly.
The answer to that question is that Vidisco is another israeli state-adjacent company that works with Unit 8200. Vidisco manufactures around 80% of the X-ray and contraband detection hardware used in western airports and seaports, and apparently maintain backdoors that allow israeli state operations to simply silence detection on shipments they want to keep secret.

Something to note is that the guy and his uncle were standing in front of the house with their hands up, around neck level, when I tried to flag down a passing police vehicle, which the operator told me was going to another call. Also, a day before I had stepped outside and made contact with what was likely that maniac's older brother and heard him say "Holy shit." then later I heard him yelling about killing me for disrespecting his uncle and a girl telling him to put the gun down. Also, this occurred in Richmond CA, one of the most dangerous cities in the US for violent crime, with a high murder rate, large amount of gangs, and regular street racing close enough to hear it from where I was. Not only that, but the area I was in, The Iron Triangle, is where most of the city's crime is concentrated. They were hispanic and could have been members of a violent gang. Some hispanic gangs are insanely violent, they could have had cartel ties for all I know. After I made the call he must have gone inside and told everyone else to leave. First I saw his mother and father walk quickly to their car and leave, then his brother, and I think he may have taken a bong hit before driving off.
Think about it, what kind of person ignores someone who asks them if they've seen their cat, then thinks, "This guy just turned around and left after we ignored him. I'm going to call someone over and have him break his arms.", and actually has someone they can call and pay for that? He was a fucking violent psychopath and insane. It just came out of nowhere and was a completely random event you couldn't have predicted or prevented. Most people don't expect this kind of shit to actually happen to them. If they were willing to do this over nothing, what would they have done for me, right across from them, after I called 911 on him, and keep in mind the strong "no snitching" culture, made his family rapidly leave, and tried to get him arrested, but failed because it took the cops an hour and a half to arrive, likely because the stupid bitch operator must have set it as a low priority call, thinking it was just a simple verbal threat? They would have done far worse and there's a very real chance I could have been killed or seriously injured, which can lead to permanent disability and chronic pain.
As a reminder, all that had happened was that I hadn't seen one of the stray cats I regularly fed and let stay in my apartment in about 5 days and was worried. The guy and his uncle were cleaning their car and I went over there and asked, "Excuse me, have you guys seen a gray cat around here." and they just ignored me, looking slightly angry or menacing and not even making eye contact. After that I just turned around and left because I thought they were ignoring me and when I got back inside near my apartment, which I had left unlocked, the guy comes after me and says, "You disrespected my uncle and for that you're going to pay. I want you to kneel and grab the bars of the fence.", which I did because I didn't want to get shot and wanted to try to reason with him. I kept telling him that I didn't know what I had done to offend him, which is true, I had no idea, but he wouldn't respond to me. When the car pulled up I jolted out of there and climbed over the back fence. Then I climbed over a neighbor's gate, one of the boards giving in, and screamed "Help, someone's trying to kill me!" They were an older couple, probably in their 60s, black, and I had spoken to the man before. They just started shoving me out and I said, "No, please, help me!", then I turned around and sprinted the 3 blocks to the hospital's emergency area drive in because I knew there was usually at least one cop parked there and told the guy, "Someone has a gun and they're trying to kill me. I'm at (address).". Then I went back sometime later and the place was completely trashed and they had stolen some things.
Here's a picture of what the bedroom looked like. They broke things, took all the batteries out of the phones I had, if they could, and to top it off they threw a bag of gym chalk and a bag of coins all over the place. My landlord sent me some pics after I told her to change the locks and what had happened.

You can see in the picture that they knocked off the doorknob to the bedroom for no reason, or possibly to have one less barrier if they decided to come back. The door was open and unlocked. I also found a mark on the back of a small decoy safe, which a past roommate had given me when he moved out, having kept it to distract people and waste their time if a burglary or something ever did occur, from them trying to break it open. The circumference was pretty big, it definitely would have been enough to break someone's arms.
After that the cops were assholes and useless. They were too impatient and stupid to listen to the full story and comprehend it. They assumed I was just nuts, living in that squalor, and had made it up or hallucinated it. I don't think they understood that the place had been fucking ransacked.
Anyway, I had to lie and check myself into the ER by telling them I was having thoughts of suicide because I didn't have a working smartphone, so I couldn't get an Uber or anything, and there was literally no one I could ask for help or stay with. I think someone was falling because this evil looking Hispanic guy walked in and looked like he was glaring at me, I broke eye contact and looked away and then heard him say, "Excuse me, what room is he staying it.", which they wouldn't have been able to tell because I wasn't even assigned a room yet. Then he left, possibly in there for less than 30 minutes. Fortunately there are security guards by the door and you have to go through a metal detector to get in.
This is already pretty long, so as an overview of what happened next, it got worse after they transferred to a large psychiatric unit where they monitor you before deciding if you need to go to the psych ward. They abused me, although not physically/sexually. It was after midnight and I think they were just sadistic assholes that amused themselves by fucking with people. It was really bad because at that point I was really shaken up and anxious, which my medication was making worse due to the powerful MAO-B inhibition. I already had severe anxiety to begin with. It was serious abuse, not minor things. I was extremely freaked out, and I was afraid they were going to lie about me and try to get me confined for as long as possible. They literally threatened to kill me at one point.
Some time in the morning I managed to talk my way out of it and I was given a taxi ride to the Richmond station, where my PTSD was triggered and i ended up freaking out, in large part due to what those people had done to me for hours, making a really bad situation far worse. It was only a half mile directly to my apartment, on the street that leads to it, and I had regularly made a 12 minute walk there in the past, going through the exterior of the hospital. I was extremely paranoid and freaked out over numerous things, one of them being the possibility that they may have told people to look out for me, likely knowing or assuming I didn't drive, and getting killed, which was unrealistic, but by that point I already had PTSD.
The cops that arrived barely even spoke to me and I was escorted to an ambulance. They had no idea what had happened, so to them it likely sounded like I just had schizophrenia, and my laptop and possibly sweater were in the plastic bag they had put the stuff in at the hospital, which their hospital name on it in large letters. They escorted me to an ambulance and I got on the gurney without saying anything because I knew it was pointless and would just make things worse. I saw the cop write lifetime on the form and then mutter "stupid kid". He was doing this right at the bumper of the ambulance. It wouldn't surprise me if that piece of shit lied and wrote I was a threat to myself and others just because he didn't want to deal with me or saw the rule as getting in the way of his job.
Then the EMT that was in the back also seriously abused me just because he was a sadistic piece of shit and assumed I was schizophrenic.
I ended up spending 11 days at the psych ward. On the first day I tried to make a run for it because I was afraid of being abused again and was seriously shaken up after everything that had happened. I was willing to abandon everything I owned except the clothes I was wearing and try to start anew, even if I had to be homeless. I ended up knocking down two of the staff when they surrounded and tried to grab me, then I heard one of the guys, likely the one I had knocked down say "Break his thumbs." and the guy that was hold one of my wrists actually started prying my thumbs out of my fist. I may have heard someone behind me say "There can't be any signs of damage" and when the guy kept prying them out I screamed it as well, then he stopped and just grabbed my wrists really tightly and I was hit around each shoulder or trap area with what was likely a sedative, like Ativan, and an anti-psychotic. I then spent an indeterminate period of time in a really delirious state and I'm not sure what may have happened during that period. After all this, I ended up losing everything I owned except my laptop and the clothes I was wearing.
