The title kept reminding me of that meme for some reason.

Holy fuck... We all have our various and sundry grievances with Fona, but what the hell did he do to you to warrant such backlash?

Originally posted by GGG Is going camping really all that different though. I think the main issue with internet addiction is the constant stimulation. If you go camping you've got tents and fires and conversations and drinking and food and a lot of stuff to do.

Then you go back home and crave the stimulation, so there you are on the internet. Again.

I guess the trick is to direct that addiction for stimulation towards positive.

Well, assuming we're taking Fona's word for it that he was actually going through the hellish experiences of withdrawals, we can safely conclude that his case is maybe somewhat atypical and in need of some kind of intervention.

The camping thing would, at least presumably (maybe not though, but it might be worth trying anyway), help him get used to just being away from the devices.

Also, Fona, when was the last time you read a book?

But if they were already looming on the precipice of suicide valley, and were just itching for a reason to go through with it... Your words might not be solely responsible for them following through, but you have to admit that you clearly would have played a role.

There's just something about the medium of the Internet that makes it seem less real. But there are real people on the other end of that screen.

If there was some depressed kid in your class in school, I highly doubt you'd tell them to kill themselves during a schoolyard squabble... So why do it if there's only the Internet in between the two of you?

Do we really have to rehash old drama and whatnot?

Come on, fellas. Can't we settle our differences?

Ok I totally see how being digitally connected to the rest of the world can be habit-forming... even to the extent of constituting a genuine addiction. But, physical withdrawal symptoms like shaking and all that? That just seems a bit overly dramatic.

I highly recommend taking periodic breaks.

Go camping somewhere, with friends etc, where there is no reception at all.

Maybe it's not so much the devices that are addictive but the sense of community they provide. Get that community elsewhere... at least for an occasional break.
  14. gadzooks Dark Matter [keratinize my mild-tasting blossoming]
Wait, are you describing actual physical withdrawal symptoms from lacking Internet access???

    That's definitely another big factor.

In fact, one of the main reasons I'm so reluctant to use such harsh insults is because... What if that person I, even in jest, told to kill themselves, was already dealing with some serious depression or going through something else in their lives, and I just pushed them over the edge?

I don't want to be the last nail in anyone's coffin.

In terms of dissociatives, I'd done DXM, ketamine, and nitrous oxide.

But I'm super curious about PCP, and, for that matter, 3-MeO-PCP.

My own personal policy is to just avoid saying such extreme things in the first place.

But, admittedly, I essentially told someone to kill themselves the other day...

It was Grylls, after like the dozenth post of his I had seen THAT DAY ALONE telling other people to kill themselves, I just kinda knee-jerk responded with "You know, you could always lead by example."

Clearly Grylls has not killed himself, but, I still kinda felt bad that I even resorted to that.

But, I also realize that I'm kind of anomalous in this day and age where everyone tells each other "kill yourself nigger faggot" like it's a casual hand shake or something. I generally try to avoid insulting people online (for the most part, at least).

When it comes to the catcalling stuff, my (relative) position pretty much depends on how extreme those I'm discussing the issue with are. Like, there are some wackjob self-labeled "radical feminists" out there who will actually try to convince people that someone whistling in their presence should be considered a legit sexual offense. Heck, it shouldn't even warrant a ticket, especially since it would be pretty damn hard to prove the whistle even occurred, or that it was directed at anyone in particular, etc, etc. But, on the other hand, I do get why some feminists will argue that there is a bit of a "toxic" culture (I get their idea, but I don't like some of the terms that kind of over-dramatize some of these issues).

So, I have no problem with discussion about a general atmosphere that might be resulting in women more frequently being targeted by even the relatively trivial "harassment" (such as the whistles, etc). But even classifying stuff like that in the same category as like... I dunno, repeated undesired touching, etc... Is stupid and dilutes the severity of the more extreme scenarios.

Originally posted by ohfralala The problem is, in casual sexual relationships, women can be unpredictable and often times don't know their own boundaries. So, while I was mostly joking. It actually doesn't hurt to ask.

As far as (letting it slide—heh) I think some women are easily offended at the thought of someone hitting on them that they consider unacceptable and immediately turn into cunts. Then, of course, there are legitimate cases of sexual harassment.

Yeah, and, sadly, the real harassment is all too common a thing.

It's what makes me especially mad about these fringe cases that are harder to quantify, because it dilutes the significance of the real shit.

Even the whole catcalling/whistling construction worker trope... I've seen that first hand on more than one occasion. Like, the first thing I'm thinking is... When the fuck was the last time in the history of humanity that whistling at a complete stranger stranger resulted in anyone getting laid?
