If y'all gotta hate people, and I mean IF you have to hate people (Life Pro Tip: You don't)... At least hate individuals for their individual actions, not entire groups for perceived conspiracy-level plots and sleights. -

I'm actually ALL for this. Learning (at least the basics of) assembly helped me make huge strides in understanding how things work "under the hood."
Originally posted by We'reAllBrownNosers Assembly is good for everything if you're good at it, and doesn't have to be time consuming. Too much abstraction with higher level languages. Rather than going and seeking someone else's library, you'd have already created your own.
I used to do that kind of thing all the damn time.
They call it reinventing the wheel, and it's a phase pretty much every aspiring software developer goes through at some point.
It actually took me years just to train myself not to engage in that type of activity.
In fact, the whole intercom project this thread happens to be about... I'm now realizing that, if I actually tally up all the hours of labor and effort I have devoted to both planning and experimenting and actually implementing various parts of it, and then added on what I spend on supplies and tools and so on... LOL. I'd have saved a damn fortune if I just paid someone to do it for me, or forked out like $1,000 on some minimal assembly required intercom kit online.
So yeah, come to think of it, I guess I'm actually still guilty of pathological DIYism and wheel reinvention. -

You can always access lower level devices with python.
I've dabbled (ever so briefly) with assembly before, and, unless it's simply for personal intellectual curiosity, I would never recommend it as a practical solution (for anything).
Python has wrappers, whether built-in or third-party modules, that handle just about any I/O interactivity, including all GPIO functions. -
2019-05-19 at 6:25 PM UTC in Anyone here play music?Actually, I will probably forego the python backend entirely (except maybe for keep track of progress and so on).
But I had a bunch of the programming logic done already in python (like for reading from a MIDI file and measuring the NOTE discrepancy, as well as the TIME discrepancy, between the user's input and the actual MIDI file).
It would train for melodic/musical accuracy AND rhythm.
Damn, why did I abandon this project? I'm so rebooting it. -

It's funny you should mention that because I actually started writing my own "Piano Hero" type thing a couple years ago, but put it on the back burner due to other priorities arising.
And this thread inspired me to start digging through the code I already have written.
I even started designing a a GUI (a visual keyboard) in "pygame."
I think that, if anything, I'd use HTML/CSS/JS for the front end if I continue with it.
And I'm legit thinking of carrying on. -

2019-05-19 at 6:05 PM UTC in Anyone here play music?I keep trying to learn the keyboard/piano.
I played the trumpet very briefly in grade 7 band, and also in the air cadets band.
But the key(board)s are where it's at for me.
It's hard to maintain the necessary motivation to practice consistently enough, though.
I have started learning about the mathematics that underlie music. At the end of the day, all chords and chord progressions follow mathematical formulae. I feel like if I get to understand it better that way, it'll help my ability to play the instrument directly. -
