I believe Toshiba or Mitsubishi made the first 16:9 video in ultra high resolution which was 1080 x 720 progressive scan in 1968 if I remember correctly. it was broadcast quality but analogue tv signals didn't get permission by their version of FCC (which was probably the US Military since it wasn't long after WWII)
and the technology just wasnt there yet. but they understood digital enhancements to stabilize and speed up radio waves.
