this^. you just gotta get a little bit creative in how you show companies what you're capable of. plus you can freelance to build your portfolio. if they see you're very capable of doing the job they require then they'll be interested. even for hackers that went to college, most of what they know was self-taught after school by putting it into practice. for the best programmers its also their biggest hobby/interest as well as their livelihood.
