We've gone from agrarian to industrialized to an information society extremely quickly compared to the rest of our history, and it's going to take a lot of adjusting - assuming we've already plateaued in technological development. it is hard to gain a shared sense of perspective, and without shared values its increasingly likely that everyone will be adrift and all art will be nothing but taste (brought to you by Monsanto).

Trying to point at older, more historical books as examples of great literature is probably more accurate but also kind of disingenuous (does Poe count as old?), especially the further you go. I mean you could draw up some hundred point list of what makes good literature, but that kind of misses the point. Literature is good because words are magic, and it has magical effects on people.
It's hard to say what good writing is but it's easy to give tons of examples of bad writing.
