There's some very good writing in the fantasy genre. Tolkien's works are often held up as an example of fantasy that's also good literature. I agree the standard that's accepted in video game writing is pretty low, the witcher series really stood out because they were so much better than what was the standard in the industry at the time of each title's release. The second game in particular I thought built a really foreign and interesting and politically very rich world and contained a diverse cast of characters with a range of fairly complex and human motivations.

TBH I think the writing for the games is better than for the books, at least the short story collections. There's not as much world building and Geralt turns into a bit of a mary sue at times while the games prod fun at his character design from now and then. Managing that tension between keeping the story "cool" but not letting it get excessively self-indulgent is the real strength of the writing in the games IMO.

No to both questions. I was close to picking up the entire collection but didn't for some reason. Pretty sure it was because they didn't have the first book in the series and I wanted to start with that because OCD.

Can you recommend one of the books in particular?

The traditional order is to read the two collections of short stories (The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny) before starting the "saga" books starting with Blood of Elves, but honestly I'd recommend skipping them and starting with BoE. In the short story collection you learn how Geralt meets some of the supporting cast for the first time (which is kind of refreshing given they just show up in the games) and get some lore but nothing essential. You also sit through some cringey sequences that don't really build up to anything more than "gee wizz, Geralt is cool", and the political elements of the world are really de-emphasized as the serial format discourages any hard continuity.

I'm all about "gee wizz, Geralt is cool", though. Thanks for your input.

It's a stupid story but I got my account that had my NewGame+ max level "Catch em' all" Ursine build banned playing FIFA so I lost everything. I should probably play the game again, read the books and be in the right mode when the Netflix series comes out.

those online server sites were expensive.

TOTSE could of been an online server site like AOL but most likely.. it was a black-op experiment. and we used to joke about that. but then suddenly it became more of an awareness thing. before there was totse.com people on &totse joked or were even serious about saying it was a government watchlist program and incubator. LOL

to me it was UFO and conspiracy stories and article clips into digital format and also a free 7 node real time text chat. instead of paying for AOL to feed a new addiction I to this day havn't really kicked.

and all it was, was newsgroup/IRC? but they charged for something that was free for anyone who knew how to use telnet. they just made it simple. totse could of grown into the same type of company.

Totse was founded by a bunch of assorted deep-level spies and special agents. You all were a clandestine social experiment, which data results went on to form the basis for Project Anti-Bluebeam.

The government has got to go
They have become the new totalitarian overlords, they no longer are by and for the people and it's time we throw them out with the sharks

You mean the Federal Program of Agencies and Groups that oversee?

At least they need to be broken down, torn apart, reassembled and be monitored 100%. No more "Redacts" there are very few "National Security" risks. Unless it's fucking plans on how to get a hold of nukes or some other destructive thing. it's not a National Security problem. hell you can give the blueprints to tanks and other high tech shit.. but it doesn't mean anyone will have the funds to rebuild their own.

they utilize "For National Security Interest" to block shit left and right.. fox fox fox henhouse.

I agree. it needs to be revamped and work for the people and not against nor be used to make certain wealthy families more contract money.

Tolkien is indeed the standard for Fantasy, almost all Fantasy writing is derivative of him, however his works is so impressive despite him being a pretty mediocre writer. Sometimes bad, even. The difference between your average fantasy writer and Tolkien is that Tolkien created an entire language and history that even today bad writing hacks (video game or otherwise) feel compelled to puke gibberish paragraphs of nonsense everywhere and call it "lore". The Lord of the Rings is full of the soul of a very autistic man that dedicated himself to some pretty silly shit.

As far as the Witcher books go, I have them and I think I read one of them, at least halfway through. I'm assuming it's got more polish folklore shadings to it but beyond that fantasy (and sci-fi) is so tediously derivative. Beyond being derivative, the only reason the source material (LOTR) is any good is because of an amount of dedication and nuance that no one today would ever bother replicate(if they could).

to be fair, "what is good literature" is a pretty opened ended discussion full of pretension and taste preference

That's true, hell, I don't think people 2000 years ago would really even grasp our modern novels (assuming they understood the language itself fine). the oral traditions and the mindset that leads to the illiad is not the same thing that produces harry potter. it's not just a matter of quality (harry potter is obviously shit), but of essence. they're two completely different things.

so if you want to compare modern schlock to modern schlock, that's fine. most of it is basically the same shit. some books explore different themes, or topics, but if you spend enough time in a library you realize a lot of it is fungible.

Trying to point at older, more historical books as examples of great literature is probably more accurate but also kind of disingenuous (does Poe count as old?), especially the further you go. I mean you could draw up some hundred point list of what makes good literature, but that kind of misses the point. Literature is good because words are magic, and it has magical effects on people.

It's hard to say what good writing is but it's easy to give tons of examples of bad writing.

    ….wait…

the medium is the message though. Oral tradition leads to one society, literacy and novels leads to an entirely different one. TV and movies are much different and the internet is almost alien. it's hard to say what the actual value of writing is today. there's a pretty large lack of good art, whether it be writing, music, or otherwise, but maybe we've just exhausted ourselves. the media that is produced today can't necessarily be classified according to art (are memes art? should pepe be considered as important as the mona lisa?), but at the same time they're cultural relics with a lot of meaning imbued...so it's art.

part of the issue is that its hard to interpret any single piece of literature or art and use that as a cornerstone for understanding virtues and values (whether this is the bible or LOTR or fightclub or whatever), because not only does the churn of a particular medium go so quickly, but new mediums are being introduced at a speed that isn't synchronized with our natural rhythms of cultural and growth. We've gone from agrarian to industrialized to an information society extremely quickly compared to the rest of our history, and it's going to take a lot of adjusting - assuming we've already plateaued in technological development. it is hard to gain a shared sense of perspective, and without shared values its increasingly likely that everyone will be adrift and all art will be nothing but taste (brought to you by Monsanto).
