i cant wait to see the russian reaction. so far theyve just launched a few cruise missiles as a response.

as a side note…the article describes the Su-25 as a 'fighter' however it is more along the lines of a ground attack aircraft, meaning it is sorta-kinda the russkie equivalent of the A-10.

I was just about to post this, saw the BBC article yesterday but it wasn't verified by the Russian MOD until now.

The jet was shot down with a MANPAD. 'Rebels' now have access to MANPADs. This is huge, but I'm currently too monged on pregabvalin to expand on that.

thats dangerous. the west was hesitant to hand them out because of its 100% likelihood that theyll get out into the wild and bring down a passenger aircraft.

dont they already have RPGs ????

RPG is designed to be a ground-target (tanks...buildings...SUVs...troops behind cover) rocket and is unguided. the shooter aims...pulls the trigger...and 'sploop' the rocket goes in a straight-ish line to about 1,000 yards IF the self destruct doesnt go off. hitting an aircraft at 1,000 yards with a single RPG round of any type is more luck than anything else. (not counting the massed-tactic of firing large quantities in the general direction of a low altitude aircraft as a hail-mary move)

to keep this post short i wont go into details on the various attempts, successful and otherwise, to use RPGs of various types to shoostee down aircraft.

MANPADS are infinityely more sophisticated and are designed to shoot down aircraft. they have guidance systems that will maneuver the missile into the aircraft...or at least close enough for the guidance system to detonate the warhead where it will cause damage. the range and velocity of the various types of MANPADS missiles are several orders of magnitude greater than an RPG...up to several miles, depending on the type.

i dont know the hands-on info of the current generation of MANPADS but back in the olden days i personally 'locked' someone smoking a cigarette from, im guessing, 500 yards or so. that seeker head would have 'seen' the exhaust of a jet aircraft as a blinding sun. i cant even imagine what modern-production guidance systems can do. (note: dont believe what you read as public-release info...as in 'janes defense weekly' and the like. its all propaganda to either sell weapons contracts or misinform adversaries)

don't modern passenger aircraft fly high enough to be out of an ordinary MANPAD's range? I think the real fear of handing out effective anti-aircraft weapons is that they'll be used against their own forces eventually considering the major military powers all rely heavily on air superiority.

The 'rebels' having access to MANPADs makes close air support dangerous to deploy, and if they've received a batch of them it's likely close air support missions will stop until they've been recovered or destroyed.

SYRIA - Russia has effectively carpet-bombed the area the missile was launched from. Special forces are apparently combing the area for the launcher, hoping to discover whether there are any more and where it came from (via serial numbers).

the real...and only realistic fear...of MANPADS getting out into the wild is the bringing of commercial aviation to an utter and complete screeching halt. and...of competitors getting a hold of stray launchers/missiles and reverse engineering them. also, the MANPADS that are exported have been 'nerfed' in comparison to the ones used by the country of origin, even if theyre the same exact platform.

the cruise/operational altitude of commercial acft is irrelevant.

i dont say 'dangerous' stuff very often, but this is common knowledge: every aircraft engaged outside conventional rules-of-engagement (ie, by 'terr'r'ists) has been at low altitude...the most likely being take-off or landing. 'they' know the limiting factors of MANPADS engagement envelopes and work within those constraints.

one of my favorite examples is the retards who tried to engage a juden-plane in nigger-land with (allegedly) SA-7s. theres too much in that case that doesnt jibe together but basically the MINITRU says a pair of MANPADS was launched at at a commercial aircraft that was taking off...they both missed.

then i think MANPADS will be released more so that airlines could consider buying anti-manpad ... things.

    i see business opportunities.

because I know how MANPADS work...and I know how countermeasures work...and there is no effective countermeasures to modern, current production guidance systems.

flares. fucking joke. a modern missile would literally laugh at a flare. it would literally, spontaneously grow a mouth and lungs...and laugh.
