During the 'Euromaidan' coup in the Ukraine there were several instances where 'unknown snipers' were seen firing on both sides - police and protesters, a tactic that's been used to stoke tensions and escalate riots in the 'colour revolutions' of the past (specifically in Iran and Egypt from memory).
The article is an interview with one such sniper, part of a group of Georgians brought in and paid by (surprise!) Saakashvili to help 'guide' the movement.
I'd not heard anything about the interview in English-speaking media until a communist who looks like Borat mentioned it in an editorial. -

SYRIA - Russian airbase in Khmeimin has been attacked. Details are very sketchy (which is unusual, Russian operations in Syria have been very open about the times their forces have come under attack if only to promise reprisals) but bits and pieces are showing up in Russian-language media:
- The attack was with MLRS and artillery strikes
- MLRS were all intercepted and destroyed by upgraded PANTSIR units (I'm not sure this is even possible)
- Artillery hit, damaging hardware and injuring ~10 soldiers
- Planes have been damaged but none in a major way
Will spend some time trying to piece this together -

Russia's made statements on this, it seems the blackout on details was because they're almost certain the attack had US backing.
The attack apparently didn't cause any serious damage, and was against two Russian installations - Khmeimim and Tartus, their main Air and Naval base respectively. The attack did not involve MLRS but aerial drones - details of the type aren't given, but based on the details of the attack it seems like a combination of quad/hexacopters and plane-type drones. Some photos show the same type of munitions ISIS has dropped from quadcopters in the past, and the MOD reports they were able to hack 7/13 drones and take control, the remaining 6/13 were shot down with PANTSIR-S1s, ostensibly with their new anti-drone load out.
Russian MOD has stated that they don't believe the drones and associated weapons systems used could have been fielded without the help of a country that itself uses combat drones, and has released radar data showing US surveillance craft circling the Russian installations for two hours prior to and after the attack. -

Artillery strike rumours confirmed - minor damage to Khmeimim airbase infrastructure, two Russian servicemen killed, around 10 injured. The attack was mounted from within the 'security belt' around the base, indicating that the militants had access to real-time satellite or aerial imagery (Russian SAMs have air control) allowing them to evade patrols.
The later drone attack has been confirmed as being mounted from a Turkish-'controlled' De-Escalation Zone outside of Idlib, and the Turks have been asked to clarify how the attack was allowed to happen. -

The turks were forced to move when they were about to unite cantons a while ago, no way this flies. -

If so that indicates that the Israelis don't already know, so Russia is successfully excluding Russian jedis from their military secrets. -

The turks were forced to move when they were about to unite cantons a while ago, no way this flies.
I just now saw this - it seems to me to be secondary; the US doesn't care about a border force, they simply want to bolster the YPG's numbers (which - Turkey is right, they are virtually the same organisation as the PKK that fight for secession inside Turkey). It seems that they still haven't given up on their plan to carve out a Kurdish state on Syrian territory - this is a dangerous gambit though because Erdogan is crazy, unpredictable and absolutely will not tolerate a Kurdish state on Turkish borders. They're likely to force Turkey and Syria into an alliance, at least militarily.

Russia has stated that they know both of the recent attacks were armed, organised and paid for by the same third-party, going so far as to say they know the transit routes for weapons and how much was paid to the militants, but haven't publicly stated which country is behind it - it would've been either the US, KSA or Israel.
As for purpose I'd expect they were trying to demonstrate that Russian positions weren't safe from attack, and given previous activities Israel would be the primary suspect here.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
2018-01-15 at 10:07 AM UTCOh, and one more thing on the drone attack - the drones were disguised to look as though they were either bought from the commercial market or fabricated by militants, but as Russian ECM was able to take control and land several of theme, they found that the drones contained controlled military components such as the fuses on the bombs, navigation/auto-pilot systems and targeting controllers.
