Let me break it down even further for you.
A Von Neumann machine is a machine that can replicate itself. It is the basic "unit" of evolution. Evolution happens when a Von Neumann machine creates a nearly perfect copy of itself. If these machines require resources to run, batural selection happens when these copies then, based on their slight variations, begin copying at differential rates based on selection pressures. Some copies come out retarded and malfunctional, sterile or incapable of sufficiently gathering resources. Perhaps resources are scarce and copies that would have been fitter in times of abundance now die off due to famine.

But that does not mean that's what you should do with it. It's not "the" purpose of your body and your self. Many other purposes have evolved within your body in the course of those basic motivations. You have evolved many degrees of freedom, including some that other animals evolve independently as well to cope with famine or plague, such as the ability to delay or forgo reproduction for the good of the herd (gay uncle genes) or for other similar aims. -

These biological "purposes" are real. Many parallel evolutions of eyes have been found on the Earth already, all pointing the same direction.
Similarly the process of carcinisation demonstrates that nature also seems to have some imperative towards making crabs in the ocean.
