I don't think of the word purpose as being very productive because again, I don't think someone gave it a purpose. There is a spectrum of purposefulness. Human intent for objects is at a fine end of the spectrum and is concentrated in such an extreme and complex way that it seems special, and it is, but it's not fucking MAGIC so idiots try to deflate it. It's not even a spectrum, it's a many dimensional design space. It's mysterious how purposes and meanings simply pop up in the environment and create new directions you could never predict. The universe is chaotic and creates its own direction in the most unexpected ways.

The mushroom's purpose is also survival, and from that it gets many other purposes. I'm sure its survival mechanisms have purposes I'm not aware of. The chemical is just a chemical structure and isn't evolved as far as we know. Maybe in the mushroom it has a particular purpose. The eye has the purpose of seeing because that is the end towards which it is tuned. But the fact that an eye is delicious to vultures or something doesn't make that it's purpose because that has nothing to do with why the eye exists in the first place. -

I do believe many drugs should be legalized and protected behind a system of education and licensing however. When did I say "not the humans"? Humans have been designed, by natural selection. To survive and bear offspring. But that's just the backbone for all sorts of exploration into design space because you have to exist to do anything like that. -

I didn't say the sun has a purpose or that everything has a purpose. Purposes evolve.
A purpose is just something being meant to do something else. An eye is meant for seeing. It's not meant by someone but that's what it's meant for. And why that happened is since our environment has many "attractors" for evolution towards sight, because it has long range information.
So yes the purpose of the eye is to see, even if nobody gave it that purpose. It's a natural part of our universe but I don't know why that should deflate it?
