MDMA from Eugenol - Someone was asking how this could be done.

What would happen if you heated eugenol with alkali to 200° C? Protocatechuic Acid has been prepared from vanillin by heating vanillin at 240 C with KOH/NaOH. What could you expect if you treated Eugenol to similar conditions? 2-allyl-catechol? If this was methylenated it would give isosafrole.

    Vanillin demethylation > Catechol > Methylenation > 1,3-benzodioxole > MDP2P

Vanillin Demethylation with Pyridine and AlCl31

Anhydrous AlCl3 (9.7 g, 0.0724 mol) was suspended in a solution of 10g (0.0658 mol) of vanillin in 100 ml of methylene chloride in an apparatus protected from atmospheric moisture. While stirring briskly and cooling to maintain the temperature at 30-35°C, 22.9g (0.290 mol) of pyridine was added slowly. The reaction was vigorous; the resulting clear light orange solution of the reaction complex was heated to reflux (45°C) and maintained at that temperature with stirring for 24 hours. The solution, which had darkened only slightly during the reflux period, was cooled to 25°C and the product was hydrolyzed, while stirring and maintaining the temperature at 25-30°C, by the addition of dilute (15-20%) HCl until the mixture was definitely acidic to congo red indicator. Of the two phases present at this time, the lower methylene chloride layer contained most of the small amount of the unchanged vanillin, and essentially no protocatechuic acid, the latter was dissolved in the aqueous phase. Evaporation of the methylene chloride yielded 0.8 g of vanillin. Extraction of the aqueous phase with ether followed by evaporation of the ether left 7.9 g (87%) of pale yellow crystals of protocatechualdehyde melting at 153-154°C.

the end is the real trick from 1,3-benzodioxole, but I think vanillin/eugenol can be skipped

Catechol is used in many industries. It can be removed from wastewater by various methods but biological processes are the most superior and commonly used technology. The SCR is a modified form of SBR used to degrade catechol. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of SCR for biodegradation and mineralization of catechol under various inlet concentrations (630–1500 mg/L) and hydraulic retention times (HRT) (18–9 h). This study used a bench scale SCR setup to test catechol degradation. The acclimation time of biomass for catechol at degradation at 630 mg/L was 41 d. The SCR operating cycle time was 6 h and the consecutive times taken for aerating, settling and decanting were 4, 1.5 and 0.5 h, respectively. This study investigated the effects of inlet catechol concentration (630–1560 mg/L) and HRT (18–9 h). The average catechol removal efficiencies in steady-state conditions of 630, 930, 12954 and 1559 mg/L of catechol were 98.5%, 98.5%, 98.2% and 96.9% in terms catechol and 97.8%, 97.7%, 96.4% and 94.3% for COD, respectively. SCR with acclimated biomasses could effectively remove the catechol and the corresponding COD from wastewater with concentrations of up to 1560, at the loading rate of 5.38 kg COD/m3.d and at a HRT of up to 13 h. The HRT was determined as an important variable affecting catechol removal from wastewater. Reducing the HRT to below 13 h led to reduced removal of catechol and COD.

Okay that does it, I'm bringing out the civilopedia

    Republic
Settlers require only 1 population (instead of 2)
A Republic is very useful for expanding efficiently in the early game.

In the early game, every point of Population counts, so halving the Population loss from building Settlers is significant.
A Republic loses its effectiveness in the mid to late game due to the larger city sizes and prevalence of more advanced Governments.
If you find yourself not building Settlers, or the game has progressed into larger cities, switch out Governments.
    Democracy
+50% Science, +50% Gold, but may not declare war or decline a peace treaty
A Democracy is the default choice for most developing empires, as it does not directly penalise the operation of your Civ while providing a hefty Trade (Gold and Science) bonus.
This Government is a suitable choice from its discovery right to the end of the game, especially for any non-domination victory (Culture, Economic, or Scientific).
While playing defensively fits well with a Democracy, the penalty will come into play should you decide to become aggressive. When at the gates of a decisive victory / city capture, do not be surprised if your opponent suddenly offers Peace, which you will have to accept, sending all of your attacking units back to home territory. Should you decide to become militaristic, switch out Governments to avoid disappointment.
