I'm not sure on which level but if we shrink the scale to something way smaller and more comprehensible it might be more understandable. Lets say, for example, a room. A room that has a closed "ecosystem". If you are alone in that room you have no problem breathing but if there are 250 people in it and 100 of those are smoking cigars you will soon gasp for air.

Sure, most of my day I feel like I'm a totally autonomous free agent. Trained dogs probably have no perception that they're domesticated.
