Originally posted by Lanny It's a commonly accepted, even among professional gamers who have all the time in the world to practice games, that reaction times increase as you age. Mind you, if you're comparing like 14 years olds with 20 year olds it's not reaction times that are making the difference in competitive play and that extra practice and general cognitive ability older players have is more important, but there's a reason pro games tend to "peak" somewhere in their 20s. Research on the subject seems to support this idea as well.
This is what I was getting at, yeah. I mean it happens eventually, but if kids seem crazy at games that's not why. 14 yearold Johnny is not kicking your ass at CoD because his developing brain reacts so much faster than yours, he's kicking your ass because he plays 4+ hours a day, every day, and takes it way more seriously than you probably do. -
2018-08-08 at 6:02 AM UTC in The World is Transitioning to a "Hothouse" stateI think it's pretty cool too. People my age freak out about global warming and will go into conniptions if you imply you don't care/it's okay. I just like to remind them that the Earth has been so warm in the past that the poles were covered in tropical rain forests. It doesn't matter if the temperature goes up a few degrees. It's been hotter. At worst, it's the speed of climate change that's most problematic because species can't keep up with the rate of change. It's an artificially severe evolutionary pressure that evolution isn't keeping pace with. It's an extinction event, sure. Humans will be fine though. Life will keep on going. Just not all life.
It baffles me how the same snake person dipshits who think we can colonize Mars (notoriously inhospitable) don't think we as a species will survive making our perfectly hospitable planet slightly less so. -

2018-08-08 at 4:21 AM UTC in 9 year old Lemonaide Vendor"What a participation award. This should have been a teachable moment about why insurance and security are important, but instead we just taught the kid that if something bad happens - don't worry, we'll shower you with free shit.
Bet: 30 years from now this kid is going to be living in a 0 bedroom apartment after going through 2 messy divorces from marriages strained by financial ruin from his numerous failed business ventures.
He could have been the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. -

Originally posted by Cootehill I used to play a lot of Battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournament 2004, but these kids play Fortnite and DOTA and Team Fortress and they're so quick that they're like some sort of electronic demons or something.
You'd be surprised how "fast" you can get when you play the same game a lot. I feel like this only related to age because kids have more free time to play vidya and it's socially insentivized due to all their friends doing the same thing. If you needed to play a lot of Fortnite to remain socially relevant among your peers, you'd be playing a lot more Fortnite and be a lot better at it. You know?
That is to say, I don't think kids have any particularly relevant inherent physiological/neurological advantages. They just have the time and desire to train their brains that way.
You're too busy paying taxes, having sex, and getting drunk to be as fast as a kid. -

Originally posted by PrettyHateMachine did you ever make mixtapes back in the day?
People would just record whatever songs they wanted to hear on theirs, but for me it was an artistic experience, I would take time to carefully select which tricks to include and would record them to the tape as a concept album.
I know I could do that with audacity (I think I have a few times before) but it just doesn't have the same feeling doing something like that with a digital file compared to a physical tape
I make the artsy, more themed mixtapes now. Not quite concept albums, but there is a unifying flow. Back in the day I'd just record stuff off the radio because I wanted to be able to hear it again. Those were the dark ages, they were. -

2018-08-07 at 11:30 PM UTC in Is it worth it to release something on cassette in this day and ageSure. I record things to cassette sometimes just because there's certain sounds that seem like the musicians really wanted to be recording 30 years ago.
I would buy a cassette or vinyl release if I was into the band enough. -
