As mentioned in your article, “I think” was big for me. I said that a lot earlier in my career life. Someone finally told me to stop saying “I think” because obviously it’s something I think or I wouldn’t be saying it. Changed my life.

You need to set goals. They need to be S.M.A.R.T. goals. That stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. I didn’t make that up, so look it up for a breakdown.

Start with a big, hairy, audacious goal. What do you want to accomplish? Grow your business to X by Y time period? Good. Don’t forget your why. Is it so you can retire? To do what? Sit on the beach? Make sure you keep your motivation up.

Once the big goal is set, break it down into smaller chunks. That SMART acronym seriously does help. What do you need to do this month? Then break it down to this week. Then today. Don’t worry about getting down to the hour, at least not for a while.

You are basically setting up a budget for your time by doing this. Once you have budgeted your time, you know what you need to accomplish in order to be “done” for the day. That’s the thing about entrepreneurship. It’s tough to allow yourself to be done. But you have to do it.

Your budget doesn’t give you restrictions, it gives you permission. In this case, if you gives you permission to be done and to unwind at the end of the day.

In terms of social connection the closest should be family, then local tribe, then people who look the same or have common beliefs (not ideology). If people can't make the connection to family (due to broken homes, single parenthood, abuse etc), is it even possible for them to find a place in their 'tribe'?

The idea of a white man in America claiming a tribe made me lol

Character is more important to me than political views. I have a pretty diverse set of friends who have very different political views, religions, morals, etc. I have debates with several of them. We don’t have to agree on everything, but we get along and they are good people. There are ways to debate a topic without ruining friendships.

Voting in local elections is probably more important and more likely to directly impact your life. Presidential elections get all the attention though.

Local election voter turnout is always known to be low, but I was surprised to hear a statistic the other day about how low voter turnout has been for presidential elections (since they get so much press coverage). In 2016, only 58.1% of the voting-eligible population voted for president. Makes you wonder how things would turn out if everyone else voted.

US stock prices these days have no correlation with earnings whatsoever, and when investors and algos and robinhoodies finally realize …..

Only if he’s retiring soon. If he is, then asset allocation should be adjusted appropriately. A 90/10 split should be for like a 30 year horizon.

If you look at the rolling returns of all the major indexes for the 43 years from 1973-2016, there is not a 15 year period where returns are negative.

You have to look long term. Yeah, past performance doesn’t indicate future success, but it’s all we have to go off of. You won’t amass any real wealth without investing in real assets like equities or real estate.

Sure. Bankrate is usually a pretty reliable source.

How so? Maybe those with an adjustable rate mortgage, sure. But most people with mortgages have a fixed rate.

Props to you for feeling some empathy. Nothing like being face to face with a tragedy to make you feel human, even if for just a moment.
