Conflict Shitpile III - Diplomacy Defunct Edition

FYI Jaish al-Islam just killed 3 of their own leaders for participating in negotiations for them to leave Ghouta, so the usual refrain of 'why would the rebels gas their own people???' rings even more hollow than it normally does.
  2. The Assad regime and its backers must be held accountable and any further attacks prevented immediately. Russia, with its unwavering support for the regime, ultimately bears responsibility for these brutal attacks

This right here is the kind of shit that makes me ashamed to be an American

Trump is personally blaming Assad and Israel is openly petitioning him for a military response, and given the tone they may well get it.

It hasn't even been verified that there has been a chemical attack yet.

SYRIA - Missile strike on SAA Airbase at Homs - several dead and injured. SAA reports downing several missiles.

Unlikely to be US as they've denied responsibility and subtlety has not been in their vocabulary lately - I can't imagine they would've denied responsibility. Israel is a likely suspect.

Next to no solid info at the moment, looking for more

    FACTS (As reported by SAA):

    - 5 missiles struck the airbase; 8 were intercepted by PANTSIR AA complexes.
    - The missiles came from the direction of the Mediterranean, over Lebanon, and Israeli aircraft were detected in the area at the time of the strike.
    - Specifics of the missile types and launch platform are not presently known. It will take some time to collect and examine the wreckage.
    - Russia recently brought a IL-38N anti-submarine aircraft to Syria, indicating they may have had prior warning.

It seems likely that the missiles were launched from Israeli DOLPHIN-class submarines in the Mediterranean. After Syria shot down a jedi-15 and effectively closed their airspace, they switched to a 'safer' delivery method - they apparently used this same tactic in 2013. If this is the case, I suspect that Israel is trying to force a response from Russia or Syria in order to draw the US into a wider war. Russia has stated it will respond to attacks on Russian soldiers by destroying the platforms that mount them, and Syria has previously threatened Israel with waves of TBMs if they keep up their attacks.

I haven't been able to find out much about the significance of the airbase at Homs, aside from being close to the frontline.

This comes at a time when US military advisors are preparing a list of possible missile strike targets.

    we can only hope.

Russia has officially confirmed the strike was Israeli, stating it was mounted by 2 jedi-15s in Lebanese airspace.

Good, let's hope Israel and Syria bomb each other out of existence without outside intervention so the world can be saved

The mood in Russia is interesting. For a long time now the leadership has largely viewed these diplomatic attempts to 'make peace' with the west as worthless, but have continued to do so in the hope of a miracle and to buy time for its modernization projects, as militarily, the US still exceeds Russia, especially in the sphere of foreign 'power projection' - simply put the US has a lot more logistics and systems in place to be able to deploy quickly around the world.

The Russian public seems to have come to a tipping point in that most everyday people now consider diplomacy with the west to be a waste of time, that sooner or later this 'cold war' will become kinetic and that preparations need to be made. The main point of contention in polls, talkshows and the like now seems to be whether it is more pertinent to delay that conflict as long as possible or to initiate military means against the west (ie. sealing off the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine and expelling US/EU forces from the region) in an attempt to stave off a wider war.
