Well there's a long history of kids doing stupid things and one can't help but wonder if the fact checking on the article was a little light.
Funnier, I think, is that Facebook and Google have taken responsibility for suppressing the spread of the trend. The paranoid side of me suspects this is some kind of gambit to normalize the idea that major social media providers are trustworthy guardians of what you are and aren't allowed to read. -

the major media outlets will always jump on any opportunity to show off their 'responsibility' in order to gain your trust, making it then easier for you to ingest the rest of their propaganda bullshit, with few then ready to question their legitimacy and respectability. you have to remember that those who control the worlds media empires are the ones who really control the world and whole societies pretty much in their entirety. through mass media the vast majority of people have their opinions and minds made up for them. this happens by the millions at a time. who do you think really decides who wins an election? who do you think really makes the decision for a population to go to war?

Fun fact: In the Bible people got so demented they burned their children as sacrifices to the pagan god Moloch. There was an idol of him with outstretched arms that were heated, so that when a child was placed in them they would slowly burn to death. Large drums were used to drown out the agonizing screams.
