protip: owning almost any firearm made before 1898 is legal in Canada and the US and can be transported unloaded in your car (out of reach) at any time. You do not have to register or declare such a gun and there are many restored firearms that are still in good working order. If you obtain an 11mm or a caliber it is hard to find ammo for, many smiths can hand make them or you can find a suitable modern equivalent that will work but may be hard on the mechanisms over time
