My basic premise is that every decision a government makes is self-serving. There's no shadowy council of tax villains deciding "we need more babies", just a general understanding that population growth mean more taxpayers, and is also required for the mythical "infinite economic growth" sought by western capitalist countries. As such, tax policies evolved over the years in part to encourage population growth. I include the tax benefits of marriage in this, because of the ways in which they benefit the homemaker-breadwinner household that we understand to be the core of the traditional nuclear family (which is at the heart of stable population growth).
This delegitimizes gay marriage when we accept the premise that "marriage is just for taxes, nothing else, so we should just let the fags marry". As fags can't have children, the government recognizing their marriages serves no purpose and giving them tax breaks and legal standing commensurate with straight couples (breeding pairs) is pointless.
