If you smelled, let's say, an apple fifty years ago, the smell was robust and strong and inviting. Now when you smell an apple you only get the faintest whiff of some kind of waxy chemical. Opening the apple and smelling it is not much different. Bland, weak, acrid, more like smelling the inside of a cleaning closet than smelling a real fruit.
