I found KDE to be relatively intuitive and easily customisable when I last used it a few years back.
My understanding is that GNOME went way off the deep end, and only seems to be alive because Red Hat pump money into it.
IIRC you can just install kubuntu-desktop as a package, then when you restart it will appear on the drop down list. -

I think so. It was a political issue. It's a common theme we see in progressive politics - standards lowering. You lower the standards of who can become a Canadian, what a marriage means, what a 'woman' is etc etc.
