IIRC there are weird little shortcuts on Ubuntu that do things like close apps or open new instances if you do things like making a mouse gesture on the corner of the screen, so you might want to look into that if you don't want to bother with installing a whole new DE.
Still, I can't recommend Lubuntu enough. It's design is incredibly barebones so it's gentle on RAM and there's none of this desktop dock or fullscreen app list bullshit.
Lubuntu is great for experienced people, but is this nigger going to start editing his openbox rc xml? Be realistic -
